I think everyone here has made valid points. I only wanted to offer a possible explanation for her defensiveness, because it seemed to be escalating. She may well have been taken aback by that woman butting in, and just lashed out without thinking. To be frank, some people (not me per se`, I agree w/ bigsweetie that it might depend on the day) might say that she was modeling traits she found desirable in an adult, (some people do) like standing up for oneself, not backing down from a fight, etc. All I'm saying is, just because someone (possibly unwittingly) puts it out there for discussion, doesn't mean we shouldn't tread carefully in regards to someones child, most of us are moms (or some variation of one) ourselves.
