PREGGO Natalie Portman...is she really a horrible example??

I saw this on the news yesterday..... Huckabee: Portman Shouldn

    A quote from the article:

One of the things that’s troubling is that people see a Natalie Portman or some other Hollywood starlet who boasts of, ‘Hey look, you know, we’re having children, we’re not married, but we’re having these children, and they’re doing just fine.’ But there aren’t really a lot of single moms out there who are making millions of dollars every year for being in a movie,”

In framing the question to Huckabee, Medved had noted that Portman had said during her acceptance speech that she wanted to thank the father of her child for giving her “the most wonderful gift,” and argued that Portman’s message was “problematic.”

“I think it gives a distorted image that yes, not everybody hires nannies, and caretakers, and nurses,” Huckabee said. “Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care. And that’s the story that we’re not seeing, and it’s unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out of children wedlock.”

Are you worried about your daughters seeing Natalie Portman pregnant, engaged, but not married. I actually pointed her out to my daughter during the oscars because she wasn't stick thin and looked very healthy and very pregnant. Honestly had no idea she was only engaged and not married.

Does Huckabee think we should hide our daughters from seeing someone engaged, educated, working and has a good head on her shoulders and is pregnant???

I think Huckabee said the wrong words and will eat them soon enough. I do not think “Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care." That was a huge stereotype he just laid out, which is wrong. Especially if he is going to try to run for president again.
I liked him in the beginning when he ran last time but that quickly changed when he started opening his mouth with the wrong words.

And No I will not hide this from my children. She is pregnant and beautiful.

I agree with Huckabee. When young people see a movie star single & pregnant, they do not put it together that it takes money, time, a home & help to raise a child. They look up to these movie stars & want to be like them.

This country would be in much better shape if we looked at single parents as something that happens to some unintentionally, but not something that should be done intentionally. It sends the wrong message to our youth.

And isn't he correct? Most single mothers are indeed without gobs of money & are constantly struggling to make ends meet. I don't see how that is stereotyping. It's the cold, hard, facts. I don't know of a single woman or young lady that was single & not on public assistance with their children at some point in their lives & I've known many.

How about you, Dug? How many single parents do you know that never needed a dime from our government to make it?

I have 2 children and am unmarried living with the father of both.
We are a happy family without the rings and vows.
Of course I do not see her as a problem, she is one of the few I like.
Whenever people come across my family they cannot help but comment on not only how cute and happy my children seem, but how bright they are as well.
We may not be the "ideal family" in society's eyes, but this is the family I have always wanted.
What we lack in money stream we more than make up for in love and respect.

And BOTH of our children were planned.
We CHOOSE to not be married.

I don't think Natalie is trying to send the wrong message, just live her life as it comes at her.
    Bravo!

So that's Natalie Portman's fault that parents didn't teach there daughters that babies cost money???? And really is it any different if they are looking at a married Hollywood couple. So my child looks at Natalie Portman pregnant and thinks babies are Free..and then looks at Mariah Carey who is married and pregnant and thinks babies costs lots of money

See to me...the big point is..she didn't abort the baby...which is a huge plus

And she has true means to support herself (albeit from my understanding she is getting married anyways).

I guess I don't see young woman now days...looking at Natalie Portman and saying...if I have a baby...I will get to be just like her.

I'd be more worried that they would be influenced by the Bristol Palin drama or a few years back...the Jamie Lynn Spears pregnancy...where actual young girls looked up to her...and here she is....pregnant and not getting married...and have no real plans other than live off of others. That is my true concern KWIM?

I didn't even know she wasn't married...and I wouldn't be surprised if many are in the same boat as me. She's 29...I don't keep track of older "Hollywood" types marriage status that much anyways.

But wouldn't they be starving without assistance? If you're a single mother & very poor where are you going to buy food with nothing in your pocket? Wouldn't they basically starve without that assistance? He didn't say that all single mothers are poor. He gave a correct statement. Most single mothers are indeed poor & struggling to make ends meet. Can you really disagree with that?

You can't undo what has been done. Would you rather all those babies get aborted .

Also many many single moms are single...cause of there piece of crap husbands who left them. Where do you lump them?

To me the most stereotypical part of the phrase was calling them all uneducated.

You know good & well that a kid will be influenced by society & peer pressure regardless of what their mother & father teaches them. That is the point he's trying to make. People are putting the wrong folks on pedestals & then expect life to turn out great for their kids.

Society continues to go downhill & I agree with him that this is part of the reason it is.

And you're missing the rest of the point too. It's not about abortion. It's about decisions. There's a decision that needs to be made long before abortion is even brought to the table. Society treats sex like a drive-thru fast food joint & yet we want our children to stay pure??? How can they?

    Awesome that you mention this.
Not too long ago in Texas we has a story about a grandmother who left her mentally and physically ill grandson on the side of the road to die.
The father was a soldier deployed and mother was not in the picture for whatever reason.
So many people were horrified at the grandmother's decision, but where were they when she was struggling to provide care for this child?
It is easy to blame her for probably the most difficult decision she ever had to make, but when it came right down to it...no one seemed to care when the child was alive.
It is sad it had to come to that extreme. I personally do not agree with her decision, but I can understand where she was coming from...utter DESPAIR!
