Several years ago, I was managing a large store with dozens of employees. One employee was particularly, um, not helpful? And I documented everything she did. I went to my district and regional managers, and they were supportive of putting her through the process of either counseling/retraining, or being let go. Mind you, she was a complete morale-killer for the rest of the store--same sorta "why does she get away with that?" kinda stuff.
Anyway, on her own accord, she found the email of our VP for human resources and emailed her. My, my how quickly the tables turned for me. Basically, even though this employee was basically worthless to the company and affected the morale of my entire staff.....I was pretty much told to just deal with it. In addition, I was put thru a 'full investigation' because of some of the claims she made against me. The company was too afraid of a lawsuit to try & do the right thing. It made morale even worse, because everyone in the store knew what was going on (not from me), and this made them hate her even more. The more she was hated, the more isolated she felt, and it was just a downward spiral. My company paid a heck of a lotta money though for retail, we started people at over $11/hour, so she put up with it because she knew she was never going to make that money any place else.
Life just ain't always fair, despite was is right or what is policy or what is legal.
