Rude Customer Behind Me In Line Today

OK so I had to run to my kids school this afternoon to bring something in for him and since I was out I decided to not waste the trip and make a quick run into Walmart. I am working on reorganzing my kitchen a little bit and needed a couple of little bins for one of my cupboard. Because I always travel with my coupons I decided to check my little organizer that I file my hot coupons into or the ones I want to use at specific stores.

So I go in get my bins, 1 bottle of Maalox with the $5.00/1 insert coupon, 1 box of Arm & Hammer Kitty Litter with a $3.00/1 coupon from I think AllYou Mag, 1 $10 off Foodsaver coupon from the AllYou Mag (bought this as a gift for a friend, was not really cheap $134 after coupon) and 1 trial size tide with the $1.00/1 insert coupon.

OK so I had 4 coupons. The store was busy but there was no one in line behind me till I had already started checking out. Which is when "Mr. Grouchy Guy" gets behind me in line. On the organizing bins the barcode on the product was partially hidden and the cashier could not scan it so she had to type in the numbers, twice because she mistyped the first time. That was sort of a pain...but not that big of a deal. Then she cans my 4 coupons. The Maalox coupon beeped because it was over the price of the product, I told her to just hit the "OK" button and showed her where it was (always happy to help train the cashiers!) and we were good. However the Tide coupon would not scan at all and the cashier was a bit hesitant about what to do. I told her that the coupon had no size restrictions and I could use it on the trial size Tide. So she decided to just enter the coupon as a generic manufactures coupon, the other two coupons scanned just fine. So the issues with the two coupons took less than 5 minutes to resolve there was no stink, the cashier was calm and cool and collected.

So I go to leave and wish the cashier a good day when "Mr. Grouchy Guy" goes off saying that they should have a separate line for couponers one that says "Here I am with my millions of coupons to save a lousy buck" as he is standing there waving his imaginary coupons in the air to make his point. I was not more than three feet away when he says this as I was tucking my receipt into my purse and looking for my keys. So I turned around and just plainly said "That was rude" and he said "You sure are" so I proceeded to tell him that it was not rude to use 4 coupons to save a few dollars. I told him that I just got two items for free and saved half off on my cat liter and $10 off an expensive gift for someone and that I run a large coupon website where our 230,000 plus members save thousands of dollars. He just rolled his eyes at me and said "Only poor people use coupons" I said and so what if they do, but guess what I am not poor. And even if I was times are tough right now for a lot of people and coupons is a way for people to save a lot of money. And I walked out in a huff. Behind me I heard 3 or 4 people in the other lines clapping for me and "you tell him" comments. It was kind of funny...but then again not really. He was just lucky that this was just a 4 coupon run and not one where I use 100 coupons

I am pretty sure we all have gotten the person behind us "huff and sigh" act or "screw it I am going to another lane" but has anyone ever out and out called you rude for using coupons? Or totally went off on you. What did you say?

I should note that I am a very pleasant customer. I have the patience of a saint and am always willing to wait till a cashier figures out how to ring up my items and/or coupons. I was just taken aback at this very rude man who thought that my 4 little coupons were taking up his valuable time when in reality the hidden bar code on my totes took up more time than my two no-scanning coupons did.

That is soo funny! He had no idea that he was dealing with the real coupon queen!
I'm glad you stood up for yourself. I've had a couple huffy puffy people behind me but never anything outright rude like that.
You should have given him a coupon for Dulcolax b/c obviously he needed it.

What I really wanted to do was whip out my cell phone and say can I get that on video I am sure the members of my couponing website would love to see that again on film.

I used coupons when I was poor, and I use coupons now. And if ever won the imaginary Wyoming lottery I would still use coupons.

When I got in line I was behind a large family with 4 or 5 small kids, they were ranchers and had 3 carts of stuff. Luckily I got in line as they were at the end of their checkout. But I did not think that it was "Rude" that they had a bunch of stuff and took a long time to check out. I was astounded to myself that they paid over $900 but to each their own right?

I think if he was so put out by that short a wait in line he must be one of those who will find an issue with EVERYthing; if it hadn't been coupons it would have been something else. He's obviously a member of the "misery loves company" group and was trying to spread it around!! Wonder what the poor checker had to listen to from him.

I've had the worst day so let me clarify this-most poor people don't use coupons. My dad called me a food hoarder again yesterday and laughed at my coupon haul I had yesterday. I know tons of people that complain to me all the time about money issues but they won't coupon. I know because I've tried to tell him about it and they think it's useless. For me it's a way of life and I've NEVER going to stop.

I understood you everprincess. The fact is that there are a lot of poor people that don't use coupon, but you and I and a lot us here at HCW know that it is a great way to help you get out of being poor. The everyday "rich" (I am not talking about many celebrities who don't really have to work hard for their wealth) stay wealthy by conserving their spending. My Aunt Tammy is a prime example. She and her husband were millionairs. Her husband my uncle owned their own construction business and they mostly contracted to build schools. They made good money, buy my aunt and uncle were also thrifty and conservative with their money. They used some coupons, always used coupons for eating out and entertainment (movies, mini golf etc with the kids) shopped at warehouse stores. And when they did splurge on nice things they always looked for a bargain. My aunt LOVED big gaudy jewelry. It must have been a generational thing but she liked rings on all her fingers and her toes but she shopped in the Jewelry district in LA and got deep discounts. They lived in a nice home in an upscale neighborhood in CA, yet it was a little rural. And they raised chickens...and grew a garden. If you looked at the house from the front you would never guess that they were mini farmers in the back because it was cheaper to have their own eggs and chickens for meat and grow their own produce. The rich stay rich because they are smart with their money.
