Welcome to Hampton Roads, that's the way it works here and in many other Southern states that dson't get a lot of snow. They don't have enough snow plows/salt/sand trucks to clear the snow off every road so everything shuts down at the threat of snow. Also to the person above who posted about kids not going out for recess if it's below freezing, that's probably because the kids don't have the proper coats, hats and gloves for that kind of weather. When snow only happens once or twice a year at most, then parents don't see a need to buy those things and stores don't sell them down here. In years past I have realized you can't even buy heavy winter coats in some areas here. I bought my winter coat in Michigan a couple years ago because I couldn't find one here. I grew up in the midwest so I thoguht it was crazy when I first moved to the south too.

I hope our schools go tomorrow but I seriously doubt it. I've already bought 24 cupcakes and 20 cookies for the class party tomorrow! I hate that everything has to be store bought now.
I loved making cupcakes for school.

I hate the way store bought tastes!!

I live in NE Ga and we are closed today. Some of the folks around here from the north laugh at us for our closings. My friend in the wrecker business posted on his fb that he has done nothing the past 14 hours except pull people out of ditches because of the ice. I don't think it is worth wrecking my car so we stay home-

It has to be at least several inches with blowing wind or very icy for schools to close around here. My DH is from Buffalo, NY and so he is very used to bad weather. My complaint is that people cannot drive in the snow. Even though it snows often here people still do not know how to drive in the snow. We are going to Buffalo for Christmas so I am sure we will be having plenty of snow up there.

So, is there enough snow for you yet? Along with the hundreds of accidents/ditchings? This is why the schools prefer to keep the school buses off of the roads. When I lived in Minnesota, we went to school in 20 below weather. This is not Minnesota.

My DD is out today. She was also out on Monday. There's some snow left from earlier in the week, but mostly the threat for today was freezing rain. Alot of the roads are sheets of ice supposedly. Sometimes I think they call off school here when they really shouldn't. I just hate that the kids have to go longer at the end of the year because by that time they are so ready for summer break.

If they don't go back tomorrow, they will have to miss their field trip/party to Gattiland and I'm sure they will be disappointed. I also haven't gotten to give her teachers their gifts yet.

I think here in the South they just don't want the buses on the roads when the condtions are icy or expected to be bad. Often the main roads are clear but in subdivisions and on back roads it usually takes a while for roads to get plowed, salted/sanded, or whatever conditions are necessary for safe driving.

Winter weather is SO MUCH different in the South! I'll shamefully admit that I used to make fun of the Southern closings, how an inch or two would shut down the whole city. Here in Cleveland, we have to have like a foot of snow fall in a few hours and/or temps well below zero to see school closings and businesses almost NEVER shut down.
Yeah, then I moved to North Carolina. The removal equipment isn't there, the frigid-weather gear isn't there, and what struck me the most was the way that the temps would warm *just enough* to melt some of the snow during the day only to have that bit of liquid refreeze when the sun set, turning everything into an ice rink. I pride myself at being a very good driver in winter conditions, but I was sure glad when my office would close on snowy, icy days because I didn't feel safe trying to navigate the roads!

    Stay safe, guys!

I live in western NC. One section of the county that borders TN gets alot of snow when the rest of the area does not. There would be a foot of snow and the rest of the county would get nothing. Rather to close schools than have a major accident.

I am from Pa and have lived in Williamsburg/New Kent since I was little. But they have never closed school before the snow comes. It was just funny that this year they closed before snow. I know to well about the roads my hubby is a State Trooper and they are all out working.
