I had a T (local public transportation) employee press back while adding money to my fare card recently. Super annoyed, I said " I do not need help, I know what I am doing". He replied "Just trying to help customers".
Hmm yes, a great help!

We don't have any stores that even offer to help you to the car anymore! I think I would have walked to customer service or the manager and demanded to not be followed instead of walking out.
I went to self checkout the other day and was very irritated at the clerk bringing her gun and scanning all my stuff. It was a mega sale and I wanted it done a certain way so that I could double check how many I had, organize items to coupons etc. Basically I went to SCO for a reason, back off lady.
Ooh, the self check-out over helpers bug me too. I sometimes go to self check out during slow times when I want to do two transaction to split up for a rebate or something. And it never fails that the cashier tries to come offer to scan my items for me when I want to do two transactions. Or they want to take my coupons before I have even rung anything up and I have not seperated my coupons into two piles yet. I always tell them no thanks, I'm doing two transactions and they back away, but it's still annoying.
There is also a store in my area where the self checkout has conveyor belts and the cashier in charge of self check out always comes and bags my groceries while I scan things. I guess this would be good CS and really helpful if I had a big cart full of stuff cloggin up the belt, but usually I'm only buying a couple things and I want them bagged a certain way or I don't want them bagged at all (I have my own cloth bags or they are big items like laundry detergent that will rip a plastic bag). I guess what bothers me most is that they don't ask if you want your items bagged; they just come do it and I never have time to say anything. I always have to rebag my items before leaving that store and I end up getting dirty looks. Well if they had asked I would have told them them I didn't want any bags or I have my own cloth bags.![]()
We don't have any store that does that here. When we lived in Fl,the Publix baggers would offer but I always declined. One time the kid bagging helped push my cart out for me{in RI} because I ended up with two once everything was bagged. In response to the rude comment about your van{ I sympathize, mine's a wreck} I might have replied, Yeah it's so hard finding a place to keep all your stuff.... when you live in a VAN!

You could always have them push the cart and go up and down each row and ask everyone if they have seen your car. Then look at them in a hateful look and tell them to help you find your car instead of just following you around.
or
you can have them follow you to the car then just stand there and start talking to someone on a cell. All while you're car is still locked up and they have to stand there until they walk off.

Some stores have that rule. At the military commissary not only do they take the bags to your car but you are expected to pay them! They re-cart the groceries into a special cart that goes to your vehicle.
In NY I shopped at many stores that did not allow you to take the cart to your vehicle at all. They put up poles surrounding the entrance to your store. I am not a small person but neither am I huge. But anyone much larger than me would not be able to fit through the poles at all. My dad took a picture of me standing between two poles to show people how small the space was.
So... You had to try to buy only what you could carry in one trip, or bring your own little cart, or leave your cart there, hope your stuff wouldn't get stolen and make repeated trips to your vehicle. At one store which was horrible in and of itself, some seedy looking guys hung around out front, many with pit bulls, "asking" if you'd like them to carry your bags to your vehicle. Of course they wanted to be paid.
I guess having someone take the groceries to the vehicle doesn't bother me so much. The reason being that I am old enough to remember when every grocery store had the bagger bring the groceries to your vehicle. You just didn't do it! Nobody pumped their own gas either.
I just tell them that I am coming back in to do another order. Have had them walk beside me when I tell them I need to "push" my cart for balance issues. But when I say I am coming back in for a rain check or to make another order - they don't follow me.
Guess they know the cart won't be left in the lots.

WOW! I am so glad we don't have that here. I think maybe the employees should be "judged" by upper management based on offering the service, not on their ability to outright stalk you to your car.
Most people who have worked retail know there are all these kinds of piddly things that management wants you to do- that you know will annoy the customer. I agree you need to tell the store manager how the aggressiveness of this policy definitely makes you uncomfortable. No should mean, No, right?
