Well here's the reply I got:

At this time you also have the option for our mail address verification. In this instance, we will mail out a verification letter to your billing address with a pin number. You would then email us back with the pin number and that will complete the verification process for your account.

I emailed back that it's aggravating because I wanted to redeem for another amazon gift card THIS month, which I won't be able to do now. And I didn't do anything to cause concern that I may be misusing the site so I don't think it's very fair.
You can get a free mobile number at voice.google.com and just change your profile number to that. That's what I'd do. It's an easy and free workaround.
