Thumbs Down Ugh! meal worms, moths, tiny black bugs in my stockpile?!

    Yuck!

I went to grab oatmeal out of the cabinet and saw a small moth fly out and I was like WTF? Ive seen a couple down in the family room (off the garage) when DH had the garage door open but killed those.

I take a closer look at my (nicely stockpiled) rice and almost puked, the bags are infested with white maggot looking worms and small black bugs (very hard to kill) All this stuff is dated 20011. I noticed small holes so something burrowed its way in.

Ive tossed anything else in there that was open, pulled everything sealed out, and put it on the countertop and cleaned out the cabinet of stray bugs. I have some serious heebee jeebies here . Im afraid to open or eat anything else that was in that cabinet.

Should I disinfect the cabinet with something?

Oh man am I grossed out!

I grew up with moths in the house. And their larvae gets into everything. Blech!! I would keep anything not canned in plastic bags or containers. I don't blame you for being afraid to eat it now.

And I would clean the cabinet with bleach or disinfecting wipes.

I would disinfect the cabinet and check anything else they can be in in.

If I have a large stockpile of rice, cereal, oats, etc. I try to use zip lock bags to seal them, then put them in a locking large rubbermaid bin. This seems to help me fight off the bugs.

Everything I buy like flour, meal or cereal goes straight into the freezer when I get it home. The little bug babies often come home in the products and since I live in Bug Central, you can't be too careful.

    Good luck, OP.

Smee, I do this too. One of my friends was horrified when I told her that flour has bug eggs in it. Nasty, but unavoidable.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I found Saw Toothed Grain Beetles in my pantry, I had to throw everything out and start over. I no longer stockpile much cereal, oatmeal, or boxed items.

Yup, after this I definitely wont be stockpiling a lot of boxed items and it will be going in the fridge.
