(When I was in parochial school we did not do review and had books assigned to be read.)

So many parents don't push their kids during the summer to keep their brains academically active. I believe, like Newton, that an object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion. Now my son is a senior and we'll never know the benefits. Bummer.
Just realized I mistyped and should have said the first quarter back to school here is for review. We live in what is considered an inner city school district.

My kids went to year round and I loved it! They had 3 weeks of in the fall, 3 weeks at Christmas and 3 weeks in the spring, usually around Easter, and finally 5 weeks off in the summer. I thought this was perfect for scheduling vacations. More importantly, when it gets really, really hot here, and all they want to do is sit in front of the TV or computer, they go back to school.

Now they have gone back to traditional scheduling. This was the first summer having off the full 2months and I hated it, and so did they. I wish we had middle school year round here.

I am guessing your schools are air conditioned. That would be really hard on the kids here. Not to mention the teachers. They just started on Wednesday and my son said his teacher kept fanning herself all day, lol. It wasn't even close to the hottest day of the year either. I don't know how they would be able to teach that way.

3timessoccermom- They started middle school and there is no option of year round anymore. Very sad about that, although they do like there new school.

whatsfreeforme- yes, the schools are air conditioned. I can't imagine any of the kids and especially the teachers would be able to concentrate if they weren't.
