Default Bus Stop Assignment - This can't be right?!

I am really trying my best to not get all first time mom. My oldest is going to Kindergarten. She is ready. I am ready. It's a good thing for both of us. Okay, so we stuck with the afternoon time slot. I'm not thrilled, but it is what it is and there is nothing I can do about that. She will be going to public school - the school is great. I've heard great things about her teacher; there are only 14 kids in her class. I'm a little nervous about her being in a school with 4th graders, but you know that is part of letting go. That's my own issue and I think partly that first time mom thing.

Getting to the point. So, today we get our bus stop assignment. For years the bus has gone right down our street and stopped in front of each house. So, this is what I expected. Since dd got afternoon I really need her to ride the bus home because I have still have one at home that takes a long afternoon nap. But the assigned bus stop for my dd, age 5, is 0.25 miles away and across a big street. There is no intersection for her to walk to cross the street. There is no sidewalk between the bus stop and our house. (There is no sidewalk on our street at all.) We live in PA so it gets cold. There is no way I could walk that far in the cold to go meet her off the bus to walk her across the street.

So, am I over reacting? (I don't think a 5 year old should cross that street by herself.) What should I do? I feel like I may not even be able to let her take the bus. And that stinks because I wanted her to get used to the idea so next year she could take it to and from school. Grrr.

Sometimes bus routes are made by computers, or people who aren't familiar with the area.

Call the school and or bus company.. explain how busy the road is, and invite them to come see for themselves.

I don't think you're overreacting... her safety is the number one priority...

We did 2 years of disaster bus routes on the first day!!! HUGS give them a call...let them know...the bus route is making her cross the street with no crosswalk.

My kids have never been picked up in front of our home. We have always had to walk to a bus stop and we have lived in a couple of different states.

I have seen lots of moms at the stop with small kids it was never a big deal.

    no edit..

When it is cold/raining everyone always drives their cars. The school system I am in now has no busing for anyone under two miles so we either drive or walk.

Honestly I am surprised they bus us because we are probably a mile from the school. If she had morning I would be annoyed but it would not be that big of deal to drive her. But she got stuck with afternoon and so I would have to wake up a sleeping child almost every day to go drive to bus stop to pick her up.

I just emailed the email address they gave us to complain to. If I do not hear anything by the middle of next week then I'll be calling the school. Plus there is one other Kindergartener on our street who will also be taking the bus so it is not like my dd is the only one.

And what is the point of her taking the bus if I have to drive to the stop to pick her up. Where's the "green" part of that?

sometimes elementary kids get bused because of the hazards they would have to walk through to get to school.

we drive to my daughters school bus...but it's about 5 minutes away (driving)....then she takes the 30 minute bus ride to school...but at our old school...it was just up the street...and I walked. They had various drop offs in the neighborhood.

There are two busy roads that would have to be crossed to walk to school. This road is one of the two. It is not a neighborhood road. It has a speed limit of 35mph, but it is not unusual for people to go ~45.

will they have a crossing guard at the intersections to stop traffic and watch out for the kids? If not I would not feel at all comfortable letting a 5 y/o cross streets like that and they (the bus company) would need to change that or I would consider driving her to and from the school myself.
