My biggest complaint with the back to school lists is that they don't send them home until the kids are in school and the sales are pretty much over.
I used to stock up on things that were on sale before school started and ended up stuck with them because the teachers want this pen, that notebook, and those crayons. My solution, after many, many, years of doing this....I send in what is within my budget to afford. If the teacher wants a $5 three subject notebook I send in three .10 one subject notebooks.
I'm sorry but with our school taxes going up every single year expensive supplies just aren't in my budget like tissues aren't in their budget.
Yes big score I have boxes of paper in my stockpile..which is a good thing because I print every coupon that comes across me when I post them on my blog (link in siggy, add them to the coupon database here and just about all of them that others add to the coupon database too)
Yes schools can be very wasteful with their resouces and I was appalled to see boxes of unused copy paper in the recycling bin. Not to mention boxes of papers that they had created too many worksheets and threw those out too (and I mean 20+ boxes of this stuff).
Remember when we were kids and got some paper, crayons, pencils, glue a Trapper Keeper and some Peechy folders?
When our district has a surplus in the budget they can and should buy their own darn Kleenex and Clorox wipes. I also have an issue with the required name brands...Crayola VS Rose Art, Expo VS store name, etc.

I think there were items on my kids lists that are not for their personal use. I didnt want to be a deadbeat or rock the boat so I bought everything. The basic items like pencils and paper were cheap. (crayons were $0.25 at wal mart) The price rose when I bought stuff like quart sized ziplocs and lysol wipes.
One item in particular was for my third grader 6 large boxes of kleenex, they also specifically ask for different size ziplocs for boys vs. girls. I dont understand what is going on where different sexes need different size bags. The six boxes of kleenex I just dont get. I'm thinking with the kleenex I will write his name on one box and send it and request that the teacher inform me if he needs more. He is hardly ever sick. In fact I cant remember him every having a cold where he had a excessively runny nose where he needed his own tissue at school.
I cant believe I never considered that there are so many supplies listed because they want me to supply items for other children. If this is the case this is NOT acceptable. My husband works to take care of us if we want to give to charity we can do that on our own. At Kroger there is a donation box where you can purchase supply sets for kids. I do remember at the end of the school year all of the children in K were sent home with a backpack full of supplies are there are MANY places that offer help.
In addidtion to supplies there are uniforms to buy and my husband and I are not free lunch so I have to buy their lunch as well.
I have a problem with binders... my twins need 6 each- in DIFFERENT colors. I have like 100 black ones in my basement that DH saved from a dumpster when an office closed. But black is not acceptable (per the list they MUST be these colors.) Twelve 1" binders cost ALOT of money!
And spiral notebooks are not acceptable, teacher wants regular notebooks without the spiral.. so my 5-10 cent ones- no good! She wants the $1.99/1 kind- in certain colors- 3 of each color.
12 binders at about $3 (best price I could find so far) = $36
36 notebooks- non spiral = $72 total of $108 JUST for binders and non spiral notebooks. YIKES!!! And of course the kleenex, clorox wipes, expo markers, copy paper, toilet paper.. YES I typed toilet paper.. etc. etc..
I am trying to think of a way to turn a black binder into a red binder. And spiral is what I am sending in. But there is no way I am spending $108 on just binders and notebooks.
What are they going to do to you if you send in black binders? Geesh!
Our middle schooler needs 8 binders (one for each class) and some are 1 inch, 2 inch and 3 inch...and I agree they get to be expensive. The 3 inch ones are really pricey! Thankfully no color specified. Because she will get what I can get at a good price.
A major portion of their grade is on their binders and keeping them organized. Her IEP however gives her a little wiggle room on that.
