I was laid off from my teaching job. Let me tell you that is the kiss of death in the education world. People think there must be something wrong with you even in the face of budget cuts. It took me over a year to find another teaching position.

I lost my job on July 26, 2009, I have yet to find a fulltime job. I really need to make a minimum of $10 an hr just to get my bills paid and have gas for the car. Money has been tight to non-existent, without going into all the details my unemployment was appealed & revoked. Now I'm expected to pay back what money I had received.
Losing my job ended up being a blessing, my grandpa's health had been declining and my grandma was needing her left hip replaced. So it was great being able to be there for them, cleaning house, yardwork, grocery shopping, taking them to dr. appointments. My grandpa had a stroke on March 28, my grandma had surgery April 8th, grandpa had 2nd stroke April 14th and died on April 27th. My grandma was released to drive again in May and is doing somewhat better.
During all this I worked at a Halloween park on weekends in October, I worked for a company doing demosin Feb. & March. Then at a renaissance festival in April & May on weekends. I'm back doing demos since the 2nd weekend of June. It pays $10 an hr just not that many hours a week.
My grandma is 83 and asked me last night what type of job she could get. She was so used to getting her bills paid with the SS that she & grandpa both brought in. Even with the widow's benefits that it brings in, it is still $400 shy of what they made together.

I don't know how much money you can make to qualify...but have her look into SSI for 65 and older, food stamps and commidity (kind of like WIC for old folk) to see if that helps.

Wow, such a shame...she could try Wal-mart , they would hire her as a greeter, not sure if that would cover what she was short as I don't think they pay much. Do you maintain a separate residence? If so could you combine your household with your Gram? Best of luck to you both and sorry for the loss of your Grandad.

Bali, my daughter moved in with my grandparents in 2003 after she tried comitting suicide. I, then moved from our apartment about 45 minutes away to a small 1 bedoom house just 2 miles from my grandparents. I gave up my house and moved in with them in September of 2004. I was on worker's comp until July 2007. That's another story in itself. Actually, that maybe why its so hard to find something now.

Right now I have about $800 a month of bills to pay, which include a student loan, car payment, a storage room, & the combo pack of cable/internet/phone. I do buy the majority of the groceries.
My daughter is 25 & has Asperger's, she had worked for Wal-mart for 3yrs and lost her job the month after I did. She however won her unemployment which just ran out last week. Between my daughter & boyfriend I was keeping my bills paid, so I feel much luckier then those who don't have anyone to turn to.
I have thought about going back to college this fall, I have about 50 hrs or so.
