The boy in the story is an 18 year old autistic boy. I think he was diagnosed late. As far as I know the story happened in VA there was a report made to the police of a suspicious black man with a gun. Six schools were locked down and he was arrested. I think he resisted it was reported an officer was hurt in the struggle. He is still in custody.

I wish this site had an edit button. Wanted to add that I have a high functioning autisic child and this is something I wrestle with. At one point should I begin to give him the freedom to explore the world alone and find his own way. I'm not sure he ever will but it will take some work. As a mother with an austic child I understand things will be different and that he cant do everything and he will miss out.

Sometimes people on the spectrum exhibit behavior that is considered suspicious or "socially inappropriate." With 1% of all people on the spectrum, we as a society need to become more comfortable with it. Not all socially inappropriate behavior is criminal.

I feel what you are saying is valid and I agree, however given the state of the world today with regard to terrorism and just plain unprovoked violence on innocents I can see how people's tolerance for suspicious behavior is low. Not sure what the answer is or if there even is one....:shrug7:

Hard of hearing people are given a sticker to go on their back windshield, which tells the police they cannot hear commands. Something like this (bracelet maybe?) is the only thing I can think of, but even then, it can be abused. Terrorists will stop at nothing to further their agenda, including acting as if they're autistic or mentally challenged.
