Didn't have to see it coming, cars have had similar devices going back as far 1998. If your car has airbags, it most likely will have black box. Just like the airline event recorders, it was primarily to record data leading up to and including crashes. Insurance companies and auto makers used them during lawsuits. Dad owned a body shop and when the car was involved in a "questionable" accident (such as someone said they tried to apply the brakes but claimed they didn't work but in actuality, the driver didn't remember that they had actually hit the clutch instead) the insurance company or manufacturer's rep would come and pull the component from the car.
Currently, not all manufacturers use them. GM has had them since 1998 on some models. Ford has used them since 2005.
I don't see anything wrong with an event recorder provided the information can't be remotely accessed or tied to GPS. I would be totally against the second type of recorder used in airplanes, the Cockpit Voice Recorder.
