I fell down a rabbit hole googling this and found some interesting reads about this.

Looks like this girl is gonna get the last laugh with all the scholarships being offered to her.
I am gonna stop talking there before I say something that would make me no better than the instigators in this ruse. I just hope Karma catchings them sooner rather then later.

Same here. There was a sign up sheet everyone had to sign and if the date was from outside the school district they had to get a visitor pass. I had to get permission to bring my son(they actually had to vote on it), he was the most handsome one there.

    This is sad.

Ugh, that's terrible. I've been following this story for a few weeks.

Not everyone has evolved out of the stone age mindset yet.

The girl she wanted to bring was also a student in the same school. She asked the principal or admin or whatever if it was okay to wear a tux and show up with a fellow female student as her date. She asked because when info came out about the prom, it specifically stated that your date had to be of the opposite sex.

It's very clear the school was out to discriminate from the get go. That is just the forward kind of thinking we need to make the world a better place!

Not true. The ticket sales for the prom were higher for individual sales and cheaper for couple sales. Friends would sign up as a "couple" to avoid higher individual prices so that statement was used to prevent that from happening.

I still don't see why she had to go to the school and announce her plans. She and her girlfriend could have bought individual tickets and enjoyed the prom together and if the school had a problem she could have addressed it then. The school could not prevent individuals from "coupling" up with other individuals. Girls usually don't seek approval of their prom attire from the school beforehand either, so she should have just showed up in the tux.

She brought too much attention to herself and the school and that's not fair to the students in the school. They've had media at their school every day interviewing students and disrupting school, so maybe they wanted a prom without all the media as well.

Well, I bet if she didn't "annouce" it, we'd probably be reading some sort of headlines about how she was kicked out of the prom for secretly having a same-sex date.

The whole thing is disgusting and cruel.
Seriously - what does it matter if her date was another girl?

Seriously, why is anyone defending this? It is discrimination plain and clear. Why were the disabled kids also invited to the fake prom? They had nothing to do with the girl who wanted to bring her girlfriend!

My sissy and I talked about that last night. I don't feel that she should have had to do this "secretly". What is the point?

Again, there's nothing stating that this was a "fake prom". The majority of students chose to attend a separate prom that was organized by parents. When someone holds a private party by invitation only, they are free to invite who they choose.

She didn't bring any attention to herself. Its quite obvious she lives in a hateful town. The school brought attention to itself by cancelling prom.

If the tickets were cheaper for couple sales, why would they cancel the prom because of one silly question about the sex of her date? That just doesn't add up.

I've not read anything about these couple sales being cheaper. SO, this girl knows the atmosphere of where she lives, why wouldn't she just pay the higher price and hook up at prom? Why? Because that wasn't the intent of that different sex disclaimer.

More importantly, why did the school cancel prom INSTEAD of just telling her, NO, she couldn't go with her GF? IT DOESN'T ADD UP.
