When insuring something (car, house, jewelry, etc.) make sure they'd give you a replacement value. Some insurance co. would pay fair market value, which is what your item was worth used.
    An example.
You bought a dining room 2 years ago for $1000. If happened this dining room will be destroyed, your fair market value insurance co. will pay you how much this dining room was worth used, approx. $300-500. But would you be able to replace your dining room for this money? Probably not if you cannot find something similar used or wouldn't like used items, because the new one will cost you $1000.
So make sure your insured items would be covered with replacement value.
I didn't know insurance out there did fair market value. I have both business and personal insurance and both agents right away set up replacement value insurance.

Not all insurance companies bother to tell you that you have choices, fair market or replacement value. fair market obviously is cheaper, but replacement value is the only 'option' as far as I'm concerned.

we had bought a house built in 1925, and the replacement value on the insurance was considerably higher, but had the house burned or something, it would of had to have been rebuilt using the same quality materials that were in it at the time, ie, beautiful 8 inch high baseboards of solid oak, etc, not some flimsy prefab 2 inch baseboard...

I'll never forget when my husband said, fair market is fine and I said, OH NO, not this time...we paid for replacement value...

I'm back!.....Back to basics, and the land of the living!

Wow and how long were you married to this guy?

And my daughter tells me my ex is a nice guy and I should give him a chance. I tell her I agree he IS a nice guy BUT our personalities don't click. At this point I'm having a hard enough time trying to be friends with him. He is in a compete financial mess and I don't like to witness that stuff much less hear about it. (or waste time trying to give advice on it) I'm SO frugal that I could squeeze dollars out of pennies. And the bad thing like I said he just bought a snow plow truck in the month of March. It just bugs the heck out of me to see someone make a mess out of their life financially and then to boot not even learn from it to do better in the future. I'm a sucker for a nice guy though. I'm just trying to make him realize that even though he made lots of money at his old great job that he lost it and he SHOULD BE playing a whole different game now in 2010.

Tell your DD she needs a nice guy who's able to sacrifice his macho for the common sense, no muscles and cute smile will make up for that.
Otherwise she may repeat the mistake you did years ago..
Optimism is a lack of information.

    Ok, I'll take it.

works up paperwork, trade in not what is owed, balance added to this car loan, 4600. salesman says, loan for SIX Years is for 20,600, ex says, cool, thanks, and drives off lot with car.

calls me on phone, and says..

got me a new car at lunch, wait till you see it, totally loaded.

and he could not figure out WHY I was so dang mad?

car wasn't brand new, four years old, and blue book on it? 12K.

hence, soon to be ex. that car was the last straw.
OMG....my husband is a bigamist! He must be, because I swear you're married to him too
