So my nice sister showed me on sunday how to fully use my ipod. I downloaded this program to listen to the police radios...

Over the last 48 hours i've been listening i've heard 6 fire/ems calls.. for the most (IMO) dumbest reasons EVER.

I now see why Cincinnati police/fire is always asking for more $$. Also, how many people who actually NEED help wait because of these people calling for stupid reasons?

Now mind you NONE and i repeat NONE of these were callers over the age of 40


All mid 20's to 30's.

2 for mouth/tooth aches
1 for knee pain
1 for an ear ache

the other 2 were very minor. Something similar to above.

Now please how it's useful to call 9-1-1 for a squad?

2 of the callers (they say the addys when dispatching) lived 1 1/2 blocks - 3 blocks from Mercy Fransiscan (this is a hospital) :shrug7:

I can top that - a former co-worker of mine dated a cop and they received a call asking about the weather. YES I said it - THE WEATHER. Who the crap calls 911 for the weather (mind you - it was summer/fall).

In the "search for apps" type in police scanner. I can listen to pretty much anywhere, i was listening to L.A.P.D last night before bed, they had 3 calls in 45min for 187's. :-/ yikes!

Not to say those people weren't being obnoxiously inconsiderate (okay, can't think of how I want to say it, lol!) and should have just called a doc, but its possible they were directed by someone else to call 911.

Case in point, I had my car broken into a couple years ago and called our non-emergency number. It's not an emergency, not life threatening, and while prompt attention would be appreciated, its not going to make much difference. No one answered!?!?!? Seriously. So, I call up my handy dandy neighbor, who before he retired was chief of police in our city, and his wife told me that they were directed to call 911. (seems several people in my neighborhood had been hit). I was furious. In fact, I almost considered not calling because it wasn't an emergency. But, I eventually did and apologized profusely to the operator, but she acted like it was the most normal thing in the world.:shrug7:

My friend listens to hers, here in Minneapolis, and she hears mostly domestic abuse calls for North Minneapolis....unfortunately a predominantly black neighborhood. :-(

I have no idea their reasons, but if they have no transportation and are on Medicaid, it will pay for ambulance and ER visits, so it may be the only thing they could rely on at the moment. I wouldn't call them dumb, but not everyone has the same mental capacity so they might have just been making do with what resources they have.

I can relate to this. A couple of weeks ago I was in an accident. Neither the other driver or I were hurt so we just pulled off to the side. I didn't want to call 911 and didn't know the regular police number and neither did the other driver. So I called DH and asked him to call the cops. So he calls and got redirected three times trying to get somebody to deal with it. Well my phone rang back and I was assuming it was DH, so I just answered yeh and the gal on the other end said this is __ county 911, I heard there was an accident. So while I made sure not to call 911...they called me instead, LOL. Can't win !!!

I have a neighbor that works for EMS. He says a majority of their calls are non-emergency. Some of what I've heard really surprised me.

My DH's Crazy grandmother (who I have never and never will meet) called 911 and asked them to bring her ciggarretes because her daughter (my MIL) was being a B**** and wouldn't get her any. And that would be why I will never meet her or let my kids meet her!
