    Thumbs Down Our Sears retags used/damaged clothings and places them back on the rack.

    I've only purchased from Sears sparingly outside of their laundry detergent. My husband decided since he lost so much weight to purchase a bubble coat. The zipper gave out 4 days post purchase.

    He called the store closest to us and found out what to do since we do not have the tags or receipts. After 25 minutes of phone calls on my cell phone (the store can not dial the area code of the store where we purchased the jacket-WTH?), we received a gift card.

    We went into the mall and came back an hour later. We walked by the mens coats to go the car. Guess what was on the rack for sale in the coat department? Yes, my husbands coat we returned damaged.

    I noticed in their dress shirt department there were non-bagged, unfolded shirts. That coat we bought originally had no tags on it. I love deals as much as the next person but since Sears resells damaged (what elseI do not want to know) merchandise, I will not purchase more than my detergent there in the future.

    I really wonder what they do in their auto shops

    The funny thing is we normally purchase higher end coats and jackets. Not fun waiting out for the bus in January in a cheap coat.

    All stores do this no matter how high end. When you bring something back, it gets tossed somewhere with all "returns". Then it gets re-tagged and rehung/repacked and put back out. They're supposed to pull out things that are damaged or worn (more than just tried on, anything that looks like it was washed or should be washed, etc.) but you have to realize this work is done by $5 clerks, often college aged kids. Attention to detail is not likely to be their motto. Even if someone is on the ball with it, Mary took the return and didn't put a damage tag on it. Sally comes along and restocks the returns and doesn't know the zipper is broken and it goes back on the rack.

    Even if they notice broken zipper, stain or a hole, they might sell it on "as is" basis. Not only Sears does that, but most of department stores.

    Actually, I worked for two department stores (Macy's and Parisians/now Belk's), and we NEVER did that. Damaged merchandise was returned to the vendor for credit. I think there was just a sloppy sales associate involved.

    On the other hand, if you ever decide to shop a "closing" store, they not only drag out their damaged merchandise but all the damaged merchandise of every store they've ever closed that didn't sell yet. I went through a Macy's closing so I know.

    But that's the liquidator, not the store. I'd write Sears and tell them you noticed this. T hey'd probably like to know. Damaged merchandise doesn't count against them so there is no incentive to sell it.

    I've seen a lot of clothing items marked "as is clearance", a special tag even noted what was wrong with the item, sometimes just noted "return". Sears, JCPenney, Macy's - all do that.

    I've written to target about this issue. I purchased toddler bedding AND bedrails and both were used and returned. Bedding was damaged and I didn't realize till got home and rails were 1/2 way put together (not in a good way).

    I'm sure most stores do this, you never know who is working returns and how lazy they are!

    If it is....then it's really funny. Funny that on another thread on this board, people are all up in arms about stores destroying perfectly good merchandise. And on this thread.....about stores selling returned merchandise.

    You might need to understand the differences of selling returned and used merchandise in regular stores vs. second hand stores: prices, health implications, people's trust, etc. While I, for example, do not have any reservations for buying some items used, a lot of people do. Right or wrong, they do have own way and I have to respect that. But to sell used items for the price of brand new and in lieu of brand new, is fraud. If the store accepts returns of the items without tag attached and visibly worn/washed, they cannot put it back on the rack, even on clearance. However sending it down to Salvation Army or Goodwill should be a better solution then destruction.
