How about FS? | I honestly cannot say if she was directed to any of these services...I was just a friend to her at the time and tried to help the best way I could by offering a place at our table, a warm shower or the use of my laundry room. I was not aware of what services were out there at that time in my life, I knew that I was not able to provide much in the way of money to help but I could help by being a friend to her.
My point in posting was just that not all homeless people are drug or alcohol abusers, and some are on the streets because of situations that are not always in their control. A life can spin out of control pretty fast given the right circumstances. No everyone has family and friends that they can fall back on if life hands them a rotten hand of cards. My younger brother was homeless for a period of time in his 20's. He lived in his car and on whatever couch he could crash on for a night. He worked, but didn't make much money at the time, he had medical bills to pay for an accident (no insurance) that he was in, and he was far from his family. The waiting list for HUD housing can be 18months to 3 years (in my town the waiting list is 18-24 months) and when you are young and have a job you usually cannot qualify for much.
Additionally there are a lot of young kids that are on the street, and they sure don't belong there. That could have been me, easily. I choose another way out of a really bad situation at home. But living on the streets was a real possibility as it would have better than what I was living.

A lot of them need mental help, and not because they abuse substances: some fell out of normal lives because they become mentally ill, some become depressed because of their current position.
You said your friend was a nurse, the part of nursing education is knowledge of social services available to patients in situations like she said she was. Not sure she was telling you complete truth on her situation. She didn't have to, but instead of lies I'd rather hear nothing at all.
The waiting list for subsidized housing categorized by need, people in extreme need have priority over someone who already have a roof over their heads.
"6 weeks" the movie said to be based on the real life events. I have a pretty high drive, but not sure if I'd be able to have that "residence" job without pay and care for a child while being homeless. Not just have that job, but excell in it over dozen other guys.. |

It's not always about choices, some have very limited options available to them.
But what's interesting to me, is that when Heidi posts this opinion, nobody rebukes it. If it was me, smee or beth...just as some examples, people would be all over us. Telling us that the aid recipients just didn't make the right choices. I've heard everything on here blaming assistance recipients from everything from not making good choices, not clipping coupons to not believing in god and praying hard enough. |

You miss my post just above yours.
to me it's not about who post it, but what.
I agreed with a lot of Heidi's opinions, but also didn't hesitate to state my POV if it's not in tune with her.
The same goes to Julie, HCM, another admin of this board and any other member of this board. |
