Default What kind of students are we producing????

I really hate my current teaching job!!!! Everyday I am completly dumbfounded my the amount of excuses being made for the students.....today the principal said "students only have to pass 2 of the 4 core subjects to move on. If they don't like you they will fail your class". Im thinking "let me get this straight...their excuse for failing math can be I dont like my teacher".

My classes are filled with behavior problems. I am currently on my third discipline system in 14 weeks and have been given a suggestion for a fourth. The excuse I get for their behavior is "they are from poverty". Hello!!!! That is not an excuse! I told my higherups that I have worked with students from poverty. I had gang members in my classroom. I have taught drug dealers and drug users. I didn't have near as many academic or behavior problems.

I feel like we are producing students who know their is an excuse for everything. They can use their poverty as an excuse for poor behavior. They can use not liking me as an excuse for failing. Where will it end!!!

This doesn't work in the "real world". I can't refuse to write my lesson plans because I don't like my administration.

It is going to be a LOOOONG time until May!

What grade do you teach? My DH teaches Freshman History and has pretty much been telling me some of the same stuff about his students. "They have no accountability, their parents make excuses for them. They don't do ANYTHING and then wonder why they are failing. There's always an excuse! They basicaly expect him to just GIVE them a grade at the end of the year."

I think its a parenting problem. So many parents these days are expecting the school system to raise their kids and teach them work ethic, etc. and they, as parents, are doing nothing!

It is not just a parenting problem. The higher ups in the schools don't care.

It's a very tough problem. My future DSD was allowed to just drop all school because she was failing math. Her mother pulled her out, blaming a teacher cause she didn't get along with her. She then home schooled her even though she wasn't the least bit qualified. When she went to live with her dad, she started using excuses right & left, but DF is old school & it was NOT gonna fly.

However, he could NEVER get the teachers to call him with a problem or email him or anything! He had to learn about her grades when she brought the report card home. I do wonder if some teachers just don't bother anymore because they're sick of dealing with particular types of parents?

I'm sorry. I tutor only 18 hours a week, and I have a LOT of respect for the junk that teachers put up with.

I so feel your pain. Unfortunately it starts in lower grades. I have 5th this year. I've got a kid who has walked out of my room and tells me what he is going to do. I love how his misbehavior is everyone elses fault, never his own.

I can tell you straight up part of the problem.........
Schools care more about the bottom line rather than getting quality, recommended & experienced teachers.
