One way that this happens is when you sign up for coupons / freebies etc and put in your telephone number, if you look real close on the fine print they may mention there will be charges. Coolsavings . com (think that's the one w/the pit) got me that way. My phone company CS explained how it was happening. Becareful of sending thoses texts for freebies etc too, because you may start finding charges on your cell phone bill too.

I’ve been slammed several times, the last time it happened was about three years ago right after a move, it showed up on my second bill, which happened to be for more than $1,600.00. MCI was the one who did it but I already had an unlimited local and long distance package through Verizon, which I was also charged for. At first, they gave me the run-around accusing me of dialing my numbers through 1010-220 and other numbers like that even though it made no sense for me to do that with the long distance package I had. Of course they fixed it, the charges and the slamming, you just request that only you (personally) can make changes in your plan. I’ve done this before and it works, I just forget about doing it to new accounts when I move. New accounts are really susceptible because the slamming companies favorite lines are that you are mistaken about which long distance carrier you chose, or that you failed to select one at all and that your long distance fell to them by default.

I had a computer and internet the last time it happened but not the times before, so they got me through other means. So while there are more hi-tech people everyday invading our lives and committing fraud against us, we still need to remember that there are still plenty of people content with doing it the old-fashioned way.

AT&T fixed my bill but I don't want to have to call them, stay on hold and explain unauthorized charges to them even one more time. I asked if there was anything that could be done and was told no so I immediately signed up for Vonage. That was Tuesday and by Thursday we had the equipment from Vonage. Now just waiting for AT&T to give up our phone number. We have had Vonage before and really liked it. The price is better too. We were waiting for VOIP from AT&T to come to our neighborhood but I guess it just took too long. Too bad for them and good for us.

Thanks for all the resonses. I'm sure the slamming has stopped for us for now anyway.

That's why I use 555-555-5555 on freebie sites when they demand phone numbers. I don't have the cell phone to worry about getting charged for txt, but I've noticed on some of the forms it'll say something along the lines of "If you give us your cell # we can send you txt and you're responsible for any charges incurred" I went and read what this slamming is and that's just crazy that a company can start charging you out of no where!

I've worked for AT&T for 26 years now. I hate to hear this. You can PM me if there is anything that I can do.
