My sister told me she can only use the powdered kind, not liquid. I never asked why....
For front loaders you are only supposed to use liquid detergent. It doesn't have to be for HE just use less.

You don't have to use liquid only, they make HE powder that goes in the cup and works fine too. At least mine can take any HE detergent.
My front loader is a Frigidare and it has a neat rubber seal and some super small holes that go from that and drain (or so it appears from looking at it and checking it out. I've lost nothing in over 2 years. The little socks get 'stuck' in the rubber seal part and are easily fished out. I've found dimes and diaper pins, socks and toys, all in the rim of that seal.
I still need to buy another mesh bag because the stuff that does get stuck in the seal does stay very very soaked! Nothing like a dripping wet tiny (the 2 year old has small feet) sock to just make you go ICK!
Did I mention that I love my front loader? From looking at many others, it seems to be the most idiot (me for never checking anyones pockets-doh!) and kid proof!
