HELP How did she get pregnant???

    AHHHHH!!!! :hectic1:

So, I took my dog to the vet this morning. SHe had some funky thing going on with her fur, so I wanted to get it checked out. (No big deal, she just likes to itch there)... I also wanted to talk to the vet about getting her spayed...

So, the vet gave her a good look over since we were there. She asked me when the last time Pooches was in heat. I honestly didn't know :shrug7:. Well.... She thinks she may be pregnant!!!!! WTH? We have a fenced backyard, and she never goes out of it, unless on a walk with DH or I.
I don't remember her getting...ummm... stuck.... on any of those walks either. So, what WTH??? HOW???

We have another female dog, who is spayed. She was spayed when we got her. DH and I have spent the last year and a half debating whether to get Pooches done. My mom's dog ended up really fat and grumpy afterwards, so I just figured a fenced yard...no problem. We finally decided to go ahead and do it, hoping she might stop being so dominent over Precious.

The vet said that if she is, it is VERY VERY early. Or, she might have a problem with her uterus (the way it felt, those are the 2 options). So, we have to decide by her next appt what to do.

Option 1. If she is pregnant, we wait for her to have the puppies, nurse them, let her recover, and THEN get her spayed. And deal with PUPPIES. With an unknown daddy.

Option 2. If she is pregnant, go ahead and get her spayed anyway. The vet said that it is fine to do, especially since Pooches is so early.

So, most of you know, I have always been FIRMLY pro-choice. But with my dog? I am a bit uneasy with it. I don't know why. Maybe because SHE can;t make the choice?

    What would you guys do?

Hmm, I think Pooches isn't pregnant, unless she's sneaking out at night while your asleep. If no other dogs can get in the fence and/or you watch while she is out, then I am thinking it would be fine to go ahead with the getting her spayed and no choice to be made.

The vet said that she could have gotten pregnant THROUGH the fence...GROSS

Its not that I value dogs life more The whole thing has just caught me COMPLETLY off guard. I have never given the idea of it much thought. Is it SAFE? Its not like a human abortion... This is a hysterectomy of a (maybe) prego dog... more bleeding, inflamed uterus, etc...
Will she know? Do dogs sense they are pregnant? What about her hormones?

Yep...another dog can jump in or could have been done through the fence.

I hate that there are so many homeless dogs now, but....I would wait to spay. But definitely, spay ASAP after birth....they can get pregnant while nursing, I believe.

I had to make this decision with one of my rabbits. She got together with our maile unbeknownest to us and when she started acting wierd such as nesting we took her to the vet. In our case we went ahead with the spay because the risk of pregnancy problems were great since the male was twice her size. The babies would have been too large for her to deliver without a problem.

So, consider that info. Is your girl small? Was the boy large?

Pooches is 1/2 boston terrier, so she isan't THAT big. 25 lbs.

As far as the boy... I don't know him . And Pooches isan't talking! LOL.

There is a black lab who lives across the street, and I don't think he is fixed, because my neighbor was talking about breeding him. And HE IS HUGE. But, he is only a year old. Is that old enough to knock up another dog? Does the size of the daddy dog make a big difference? (I can't imagine him getting it done THROUGH the fence though)...

When you had this done with your bunny, were there increased risks?

I use to have a male poodle that could climb a fence. You could put in the back yard walk thru the house open the front door and he would be on the front porch.
If it was me... I would have the puppies. I love puppies and all the sweet puppy kisses... Puppy kisses for every one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Umm... can't they do an ultrasound? I would think if there's a possibility of something wrong with her uterus they'd do an ultrasound right away. (or x-ray)

I doubt she is pregnant, but in any case I would wait just to be safe. Keep a CLOSE eye on her when she's in the fenced in yard and see if she has a visitor. If she does, then she just may be pregnant.
