I totally agree with this. This is a war fought by the minority and you don't see it or hear about it much anymore. If it doesn't touch you in some way, it doesn't concern you. This isn't how it is for everyone, but I would say for the vast majority of people. I don't like war period, but I wish this was like WWI or WWII where everyone had a role to play and it mattered to everyone.

there was a young lady at Chili's the other day, very obvoiusly FRESH from boot camp for the Navy( we are close to Great Lakes naval base). She was totally caught off guard when i stopped by her and thanked her for joining the Navy. I was not sure if she might have had a weekend pass to see family so i did not buy her a drink like i wanted, they cannot drink while in Boot camp(well sneaker camp really is what the Navy calls it here LOL)

You could have media coverage for a variety of reasons, but it is ONLY done with your permission. You have to request it.
Ok, as a memorium? That's fine! When I think of media, I think of pushy I-gotta-get-the-story, lack of privacy people. As a way to remember your loved ones I am ok with.

It IS sneaker camp, the ones who went through BOOT camp call this a kinder, gentler Navy ;) I was actually with the last division to wear boots through it all, 501!! And thank you, it's always great when people stop you and thank you for doing this :)

I have mixed feelings on this. On the one hand I don't have a problem with it if the families request it and it may help to honor our military if done in a respectful way. On the other hand, my dad is recently retired from the National Guard and there were days during his career when people in his unit received threats and were called baby-killers, etc. I remember one time during the Gulf war when they were warned not to wear their uniforms while driving to work--they had to put them on when they got there--because of a threat. Had my dad died at war I think I would have wanted to grieve in peace without the media and without having to worry that someone would show up at the funeral to dishonor him by shouting names or protesting the war. My dad retired early (and took a cut in retirement) because they were going to send him to Iraq if he stayed in. He didn't agree with this war at all, but that didn't stop people from ASSuming that because he wore a military uniform he was a murderer. People said all kinds of rude comments to him in public during his last year. He had been in for 30+ years for crying out loud! It's not like he joined up at the age of 50 hoping they would send his butt to Iraq. He did his time and got very little for it in the way of respect. Sorry, for the hijack. I just had to vent. I don't have any problem with people who want to be honored or have their family members honored by having news coverage (I have nothing but respect for our military) but I wouldn't choose public news coverage for my family.
Currently in the process of moving and .
    I won't be around much.
