Default Brown University Bans Columbus Day Holiday Observance

Of course these half-wit PC liberal still get the today off. Curtis Sliwa's opinion is that this decision is an insult to the hertiage of Italian-American and there was slavery and cruelity happening in the Western Hemispere before 1492. What next, Peta working to ban St. Paddy Day events, since it assumed St. Patrick drove all the snakes out of Eire.

I bet Brown U puts on a nice Lilith Fair.

Brown Faculty Votes to End Observance of the Columbus Day Holiday

Following a vote of the faculty, Brown University will eliminate the formal observance of Columbus Day from its academic calendar and will designate the second Monday in October as Fall Weekend holiday.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — At its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday, April 7, 2009, the faculty of Brown University took action on a proposal to eliminate observance of the Columbus Day holiday from the University's academic calendar and to designate the second Monday of October as Fall Weekend holiday. The Faculty Executive Committee released the following statement Wednesday:
Since fall 2008, faculty, staff and student committees at Brown have discussed proposals to eliminate the formal observance of Columbus Day. At its meeting yesterday (Tuesday, April 7, 2009), the Brown faculty voted by majority to amend the Faculty Rules and Regulations to designate the second Monday of October as the Fall Weekend holiday. Modifications to the University’s academic calendar require a vote of the faculty. Following much discussion, the vote was not unanimous, reflecting the difficulty and complexity of this sensitive and symbolic issue.

Funny, we just finished watching a PBS documentary on Columbus. At the end, I turned to my DH and said..."We celebrate this?". It was pretty sad stuff. I realize he "found the new world" (which he thought was Japan, and he was a bit behind Leif Erricson), but he also took prisoners, killed natives, and brought syphilis to Europe. Within 50 years, every native in the islands they came to had died of oppression or disease. He was on a quest for gold and to turn every native Christian. It wasn't in a nice, fun loving way either.

Hey Kas-- Did you know that Columbus gave his men "rewards" when he felt they deserved them? You know what they were? Little girls. Little girls he took before burning their villages.

Glad to here that you are so supportive of a monster who promoted rape and molestation of pre-pubescent girls!

Oh, and could you please stop the name calling every time you type the word "liberal". Its getting old. And losing credibility fast...

    Wanted to add this...

from a letter Columbus wrote a friend in 1500

" A hundred castellanoes are as easily obtained for a woman as for a farm, and it is very general and there are plenty of dealers who go about looking for girls; those from nine to ten are now in demand"

I think this is similar to when schools take spring break the week of good friday, more common when easter falls in march. They aren't denying the holiday exists.

If some MUST have that weekend in October, it should be for something OTHER than Christopher Columbus. It's kind of like having a holiday to celebrate Adolf Hitler.

No worse than historical accounts of what happened in England debtor prisons. However, back in those liberal free days, a "civilize" female was the property of her father, than her husband and finally her brother(s). Please don't link me to ****, since many of the progressives back in the FDR era viewed the Fueher almost like libs do The Annointed One. Heck even one of Boston capitalist/criminal, Joe Kennedy, was gunho for Adolph up to Pearl Harbor.

Given I read the traditional historical accounts of Columbus, I know it took those who hate white Christian men to tarnish a great man. Columbus was lucky that the natives of Spain had found courage and placed their faith in God to drive the heathen Moors out of their land. Can't say the same about the wussies who run that nation now. Finally, the kings of Portugul were backing attempt to reach the Orient by going around Africa. Once the New World became widely known, one of the Pope decreed that Spain could conquer, settle and bring the Word of God to one part, while Portugal could do the same with another.

So what do the liberals have plan for the 1st? Perhaps get Obama to view a parade and sell hard working and right thinking Americans that unions will make everyone life better.

Seriously, if you are going to sit here and DEFEND a tyrant who murdered, raped, and molested...I am not even going to begin a debate. I would simply rather not have a conversation with someone who supports such things. Absolutely frightening. I am off to make sure my DD is close.

Does anyone else find this grossly disturbing?

    CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Christopher Columbus - MSN Encarta

A few article that reasonably paint Columbus as a historical figure, not as an evil Christian white male. When it come to their own world, liberals seem to have blinders on. Evil folks they agree with are saints and just misunderstood.
