Or just paid their employees crap and crap benefits and we as the tax payers can just support them? :shrug7:
Who knows. Ultimetly, it falls on the company themselves. They COULD have had better contracts years ago... their fault. Not the workers.

Acceptable plans for long term viability needs the union to make sacrifices too.

At this point, no one can say the the gov't didn't try. If GM and Chrysler fail..its their own fault.

We as tax payers though, should brace for the economical fall out, and the massive rise in gov't assistance.
There was a really good cost break down awhile ago if the major 3 fell (It looks like right now, it is only 2)...
It would cost taxpayers MORE than what these companies recieved in bailouts. :hectic1:

    Kausfiles : Wagoner: Obama's Diem?

"After visibly defenestrating GM CEO RIck Wagoner, and moving to replace the board of directors, won't Obama now "own" the GM problem? If the company shuts down in the near future, costing tens of thousands of blue collar jobs, it will be under executives implicitly or explicitly chosen by Obama. It will be Obama's failure, not simply GM's failure, no? A public sector failure, not just a business failure. Doesn't that make it harder, not easier, for the administration to walk away and force the company into bankruptcy (if, for example, the company's plans for "viability" continue to fall short after the new 60-day deadline)? And doesn't that, in turn, make extracting the necessary concessions (by threatening bankruptcy) more difficult as well?"

I am not sure how a 10 sentance blog qualifies as anything to take to heart...

Although, I do get the impression that maybe it is not about the companies getting bailouts, or the unions, or the thousands of workers at stake.... but ANY excuse to say "look...Obama failed"...

    To me that is nauseating...

Wow, I sure hope no job is better than reduced benefits. I feel sorry for those union workers caught in the fall out who are willing to make concessions.

Sorry Beth. I drive a GMC Envoy and it is absolutely the best vehicle I've owned (and I've owned about 7 vehicles). I use it to haul grain, hay, horses and you can't do that with a Honda Civic

That's difference in needs. Unfortunately, many American people do not have lifestyle that require them to haul grain, hay, and horses. Many choose Honda Civic due to its fuel efficiency and American auto makers cannot compete in the compact car market.

The bad thing is young people start from compact car market and they develop loyalty to the brand. If they start from Honda civic, they will go on to buy Accord. If they start from Toyota Corolla, they will go on to buy Camry. GM and Ford focused on large cars and they do pretty good job making them but they misread the market trend.

Doesn't anyone see anything wrong with the government taking control of the Auto industry, the banking industry, wanting to take control of "any entity that is too big to fail" and control the salaries of those IN those industries? I do. Many have been bantering around the term communism and socialism. This isn't either of those, this is called Facism. The government should not be in control of ANY private industry, nor should the government be able to control the income of any private industry, executives or otherwise.
The Big 3 should all be left alone, let them file Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which would allow them to restructure, including the UAW contracts, and go from there. When you make cars where you literally lose $1500 per car paying out the benefits and so on for their employees and retirees, there is a major problem with how that company is run. That's also why Toyota, Nissan, Honda, etc., are doing fine. They're not losing that money, they are doing it right. The idea is to be able to make a PROFIT in order to keep the company solvent.

I see plenty wrong with it and agree with what you wrote. The trouble is most Americans are more concerned with american idol and dancing with the stars to notice their country slipping away....reality isn't as sexy.

To be fair, the trend has been going on for 80 years. We go through ebbs and flows where government expansion is faster than at other times but it's always expanding. Too few people have been caring for too many decades.
