I have had to NICU babies....each have been given morphine as well as other STRONG pain killers. I personally would prefer them have something to help them with the pain, with this being said, I had two NICU babies with serious health concerns that have faced way too many painful situations for their tender ages.

Just a fyi for anyone that will be getting children's tonisls removed. Ask if they can pump out your child's stomach after the tonsils are out. This usually stops the kid from getting sick and vomiting afterwards because they swallow spit and blood during the surgery which upsets their stomachs. When I spoke to my son's doctor about the surgery before hand and asked if he could do it, he said it's standard practice for him. Not sure if all doctors do that though, so you might want to ask.
Both my kids have had their tonsils and adenoids out in the last month. DS is 3 and DD is 5. They were not given morphine, but tylenol with codeine instead. DD was not keeping anything down at first, but was better within the first 24 hours. I kept pushing fluids anyway, as she would absorb something before vomiting. The worst part was keeping the antibiotics down. That and the referred ear pain she still has on day 12. Poor kid. DS was pretty resilient but woke up with a sore throat for most of his 2 week recovery time. He healed faster than DD, but she had her last case of tonsillitis the week of the surgery, so I think her body had more to bounce back from.

The biggest goal after tonsillitis is to keep the child's pain at a level they can at least drink. Medicine is a great way to facilitate this.
If you are using Vicodin at the same time as tylenol- be Careful! Vicodin has tylenol in it. To determine how much look at the prescription label.
**(IF your child has any history of liver problems do not follow the following formula, but check with your doctor)**
To find the correct dose of tylenol you can use the following formula: 10- 15 mg of tylenol for each kg your child weighs. Do not exceed 50-75 mg/kg each day.
In english - your child weighs 65 pounds if I remember correctly. That is 30 kg (65 / 2.2= 29.54 you can round up for easier dosing). 30 Kg X 10mg = 300 mg per dose. If you give this dose every 4 hours for a day or two you will be within the limists of 2250 mg of tylenol per day.
Remember to take into account the tylenol in the vicodin she is taking. Also, keep in mind vicodin is a medication that can make people sick to thier stomach if taken without food.
Good luck!![]()
