Ok, I have been really sick for the last week and a half with a cold that just keeps getting worse. Yesterday I go to the doctor for some "help". He knows I don't go unless I'm at my wits end. Tell him my sinuses are so congested my head hurts, can't breath, nasty cough, extremely tired and a nasty sore throat. Taking off work is not an option at this point. So, he writes me a script for a decongestant, and some nasal spray (used for allergies) and I ask him for an antibiotic for the sore throat and sinus. He gives me that also. Well, if I take antibiotic, I need diflucan for yeast infection. I have no prescription benefits. So I go to CVS, thinking at least I can use my CRT for a $25 GC for new scripts. After about 10 min, they call me back and I find that the scripts will run me about 400.00!!!! I ask about generics, and a no go. So, I go to WalMart. Ask them right off the bat how much. The generic of the anitibiotic is $45, the nose junk is $125, and the decongestant is $145. No generic in those. The cheapest would be the generic of diflucan which is $4. Needless to say, I've been up since 3:30 am not feeling well, can coughing my brains out. I'm going to call the dr. today and bit** him up on side and down the other. He is fully aware that I don't have prescription coverage. Why couldn't he just prescribe pennicillian or cephalexin? I am just soo livid over this. Half tempted to go to the local walk in clinic and spend $45 just to get something to help me get over this darned cold. Sorry for the long rant, but really mad at this point.

Sorry your not feeling well.Hope you feel better some.
While I understand the dollars and cents of it, your anger is a little extreme. You went to the doctor to get prescription; he gives prescription; you're upset because it costs too much to fill. Would a less expensive drug perform the same function? That's for a doctor or pharmacist to answer. I'm just saying you getting mad wastes your energy and stresses you out in addition to feeling lousy. You can just as easily be calm in your consultation with the doctor, and nobody need get their blood pressure elevated.

What really makes me mad is about 6 or 8 months ago, I had the same symptoms etc and he gave me an antibiotic that cost me a whole 12. I have worked in the medical field, and I know what drug does what. I do know there are other alternatives to what he gave me. I guess what makes me the maddest is if it was one of the kids, and they were younger and had to have it, what would a mom do? When I deal with people, I am very calm and not disrespectful at all. I understand he has alot of patients he sees in a day. I also understand that it is the drug companies who "set" the price of the drugs. But I also wonder what kind of kick backs he gets for every script filled. I will ask for samples as I know doctors do get them. Not necessarily for antibiotics, but at least for decongestants.
I know I sounded pretty harsh, but just really ticked me off that somewhere out there, there are people who have to pay for this stuff because they need it. My youngest DD is on BC to control her period. Ins. won't pay. It costs us $50 a month just to keep it under control. That's outrageous.

Pick up the phone and call the office and tell them that you can not afford the prescriptions. Ask if they have any samples of comparable medications or to call in something that is affordable. The offices are usually very good at working with people.

Oh I do hope you feel better. Can you just call and ask for something to be called in for you that is generic instead of having to go back? is there anything OTC that you could take for the congestion that is less expensive?
Even though I have been going to my Dr for several years, I still have to tell him to give me something that I can get in generic form to save me money. Doctors see so many patients that we can't expect them to remember what we want. A friendly reminder to your doctor about prescribing generic meds will save you the aggravation, time and money.
Get well soon!

Ever forget your coupons at home?run back home to get them!
Thank you all for the responses. Patiently waiting for the doctor to open before I go to work. I am going to have him call in a script to cvs. I have been doing sudafed since I got this stupid cold. Along with Nyquil/Dayquil, vicks in the vaporizer, putting it on my chest, drinking hot tea with honey/lemon, tried Robutussin, pretty much anything I can think of. Even some old "home" remedies like the mustard pack. Just upset this happened at the worst time, BF got laid off, so I can't afford to miss work. I did call off Monday and slept all day. I have one of those rice packs to put on your sinuses with peppermint oil in it. That is about the only thing that has helped my sinuses, but can't walk around with that on all day.

I actually worked with a pharmacist for about 6 years, and they taught me quite a bit. It was extremely informative. I still talk to her about the different meds. that have been prescribed to me and my family so I know exactly what we are getting into with interactions, side effects, etc. I did call her, and she also told me there were cheaper meds he could have prescribed. I'm upset due to the fact that
1. Drug companies get away with charging so much for these drugs
2. The kickbacks that doctors get for the scripts that get filled.
I understand that I asked for scripts, but on the same note, why prescribe an allergy nasal spray when it's not even allergies? All I asked for was the antibiotic and diflucan. He is the one who did the other two. And at this point, I can barely afford the antibiotic.
