I have to say that I am surprised that no one seems to care about this...
So I am reading the paper this morning and come across an article about this stimulus bill that the House/Senate are trying to get passed.
Dems in the House voted for the E-Verify component, but once it got to the Senate, Dems there pulled it out.
For those who don't know, E-Verify confirms the legal working status of new hires. The House voted to require employers receiving federal money to use E-Verify.
E-Verify reduces unauthorized employment, minimizes verification-related discrimination, is quick and non-burdensome to employers, and protects civil liberties and employee privacy.
Now, this isn't meant to be a debate about the stimulus package. We already have one of those. Regardless of whether or not the bill is passed, I am angry about the Democrats I support taking this out of the proposed bill. Using E-Verify is a way to combat illegal immigration. It ensures that American citizens, LEGAL immigrants, and documented foreign workers get American jobs.
With all the hullabaloo about corporations sending jobs overseas, how is this any different? What's the difference if we send jobs overseas or give them to illegal immigrants here in the States?
E-Verify should be mandatory for ALL employers! I cannot think of a reason for why E-Verify is a bad thing. Maybe I completely missing it, and if so, I want someone to fill me in. In the mean time, I am not happy with this.
If the stimulus bill passes with the E-Verify component missing, businesses that are getting federal taxpayer money WILL NOT be required to hire legal workers. They can hire the next guy who illegally makes it over the border. How is this right?![]()

Well, if they put it in there, their voting base wouldn't be as big now would it? lol!
Everyone's too busy reading/arguing about food stamps
I care and totally agree with you, there's no legitimate reason that I can see for pulling this off of there.

WTF?
The delay "is a good thing because it is extremely time-consuming and burdensome for contractors to comply," said Dawn Lurie an immigration compliance attorney in the McLean, Va., office of Greenberg Traurig.
And it's not burdensome for a family to not have a job because an illegal took it?
Last year before the economy tanked, local owners of landscaping/lawn mainteance companies were worried if they could bring in enough legal help from Mexico and Central America. The workers stay for 10 months and than go back home. Given the nature of the work, most Americans won't do manual labor that may require long hours and if it rains, work on the weekend. As workers return from other countries each year, their pay goes up and since this is all legit, they are paid OT.
Beside the physical demands of this line of work, employees are expected to act professionally. The perception is that many unskilled young men who could fill these jobs won't show up each day, leave early, drink or do drugs at the worksite or don't listen to the boss. While these businesses provide the transportation to each job site, one still needs to get back and forth to the business location and typically public buses is a no-go.
