HOT Rude cashier at a Dollar General

I am very upset!

I bought several cans of Progresso Soup that were on sale. I had a coupon for Progresso Soup, but I did not notice that the coupon was for "Classic Progresso Soup" and the soup I was buying was the "Light Progresso Soup".

This caused the coupon to beep and not deduct itself off my bill. But instead of handing the coupon back to me and explaining it wasn't valid for that purchase, the cashier just threw it in the trash without saying anything at all to me!

I made her dig it out of the trash and give it back to me. It was a perfectly good coupon, several weeks away from expiration. The cashier got hateful with me when I made her give me back my coupon.

If the cashier had just handed the coupon back to me in the first place, it would have been no big deal. But throwing it away without even saying anything to me was very rude!

I went to the Dollar General website and filed a complaint. I told them which store it was, too.

When I was a cashier, I made an awful mistake of joking with a customer about their credit card.

I was 15, just started working and didn't know any better that this was something you just did not joke around with a customer. The customer completely chewed me out and I had to go to the break room to calm down because I was on the verge of crying/quitting. I had meant it as a light hearted joke and I thought I had said it as such but the customer apparently thought I meant differently. They probably thought I was very rude and I didn't mean to be. I worked at that store for 5 years and that 1 experience still sticks out in my head 13 years later. I'm so happy I didn't quit because of that experience, but situations like that seriously influence a person and how they should act.

I don't know what the cashier said to you that made you think she was overly rude or hateful, but hopefully you told her how to handle the situation should it ever arise again for them. Probably telling them that coupons are something that you use to save money and that other people probably use them to and to just give the coupon back if it doesn't work if it happens again would help her out a lot. I hope she doesn't get chewed out at work for such an innocent mistake. (like I said, I don't know what she said but I think throwing out a coupon is an innocent mistake)

I hope you have a better experience at dollar general next time!

That cashier had no right to throw your coupon in the trash and then act rude. She should know better. I am glad you filed a complaint.

The cashier could have done that completely innocently. So many people don't understand couponing and wouldn't have known that that coupon was so important to you. The casual couponer, which is an overwhelming majority of people who say they use coupons, would probably have no problem with what she did.

I would not have filed a complaint. I'd have explained to her that I would use that coupon later and that I need it back. Then tell her that next time it would be way better if she just handed the coupons back because some folks really get ticked about stuff like that, yada yada.

If you've been couponing for any length of time, you should know that much worse can happen and you really have to pick your battles. You need to figure out what's worth burning a bridge over cause you might have just done that over a Progresso coupon.

The cashier may not have meant anything by throwing the coupon away, but she did not have to act rude after the fact. She should have just apologized. I think her attitude was a good reason for the complaint, not just the act of throwing the coupon away.
