I don't do Kohls much, but this is sure peculiar. Did the bank charge you any fees?
I got a letter form the bank today. When I opened it I thought hmmm whats the deal? A bounced check??? I had just checked my balance online earlier this week, and knew I had money. Well I open it and there is my refund check from Kohl's.
I had bought a DVD player back on black friday, however it was not the right one on sale. I had a friend buy it while I went to another store to get our other stuff. So she wrote my check. I did not know about it until she came to the car. Well by then the damage had been done. They would not even try to help because I had paid with a check. (yes, I know it takes 10 days to clear) So I waited and took it back after the check had cleared the bank. The girl at CS told me I could not get it back in cash since it was over $100. SO they would have to send me a refund check. I said ok and just decided to deal. However, my friend who actually bought the dvd player for me also purchased a camera. She tooks hers back the next day and CASH!!!! I was pretty ill after I found that out.
Now fast forward to today. After I opened the returned check letter, I quickly called the bank to find out what was going on. I really got no help form the bank because all that was on the check was REFER TO MAKER. The girl at the bank said you need to call Kohl's, I have no clue why it will not go through.
I called Kohls Corporate, got the the CC line and the transferd me. The credit girl was nice though. After about 30 minutes of trying to talk to a human, I finally got a rep. She said she had no idea what was going on and had never heard of it. Anyways she emailed teh problem to her supervisor and called me back within 30 minutes to tell me another check was on the way. I am wondering if this one will actually be worth cashing too???? I got the reps direct line, so now if I get another rubber refund I can actully get a human.
It just really pisses me off because Kohl's has had my $120 in there posession for over a month now!!! I JUST WANT MY MONEY BACK!!!!!!:hectic1:
ANybody else ever had a problem with them, oh yeah I didnt use the Kohls cash either, so there was no reason for the check to not be sufficeint.

Oh yeah it was a $3 returned fee. I told the rep I wanted it refunded also!
I have had problems with them too! It took a store manager, a call to Kohl's corporate and almost a month to get it straightened out!
This is unbelievable that any reputable store could be so incompetent! I hope you don't stop at just getting your money back & report them to every government agency that will take a report.

If I follow all this correctly, your friend wrote the check for the original purchase right? Is it possible that her check did not ultimately clear? They usually hold for 10 days or whatever to allow for the check to clear but they don't always really go through in that time frame. If her check didn't clear, they would stop your refund check and that would create the "refer to maker". "Refer to maker" usually means that there's been a stop put on your check, not NSF or something so unless there was a mistake along the line, there has to be a specific reason this check was stopped.
I'd call their corporate office and ask for their accounts payable department. They're the ones that cut checks and therefore should know why this check was stopped. Be really calm and collected when you call, these aren't people that deal with customers directly much so cut them some slack so you can get the info you need. Go to a manager there if needed. They'll need the check info to help you.

She wrote out my check... I signed it and she just filled in the price. I had my debit card with me or otherwise I would have put it on there.
I know for sure the check cleared and that is went thru with no problems... SO NOW it is all Kohl's fault... none on me. I did everything correctly, it is the company who screwed up! I really just want my money back it is just plain ridiculous.........
Ah, got it. Did you call their accounts payable department and talk to them?

Calls can be a bit of a pita.
In August I bought a bunch of stuff while NC was having thier tax free holiday, which includes on line since Kohls is in NC.
I bought something like $400 worth of stuff. They didn't take off my sales tax. I emailed them and the reply was "that is only for orders under $100." WRONG! I am a business in nc, we are sent stuff from the state saying what is and isnt' included in tax free weekend, my 30 some odd items of clothing that most of which were under $10 each were supposed to be tax free.
I email them then again and I get a reply "we will check into it" several days later they ONCE AGAIN TELL ME NO....
So this time I go onto the state DOR copy and paste exactly what the law states.
FINALLY they agree I can have my $25 back I paid.
However, they were not going to give me it back until I fought for it.
