    Default Tax on Soda

Dr. Daines, a physician would like to tax soda to reduce the obesity level of America. He wants to add an 18% tax to soda. You can view his You Tube Infomercial here

I drink roughly a 6 pack a day and I'm not obese and I resent the heck out of his trying to force me to give up my soda.

Being a physician, he needs to do some further research on the effects of medicine on weight. So many of the medications that the Dr.s so quickly write a script for will pack on the pounds. Yet the all knowing, drug company benefit receiving Doctors will tell you that they do not cause weight gain and are not addictive because they believe the lies that are told to them by the drug companies. These lies are based on a research study that a) did not last long enough and b) did not include enough study subjects.

Off my soapbox while I go pour another cold one (soda that is).

What a waste of energy this guy is.

I can name 100 different drinks with the same sugar, calories and no nutritional value... the same as sodas. Kool-aid. Hawaiian Punch. Sunny D. Oh, those have Vitamin C, they MUST be healthy.

What about my Diet coke? He better not bring up that stupid study I saw yesterday, with some crackpot who drinks a diet soda and then compensates for it by eating a whole pie, and then tries to tell me that diet sodas make you want sugar, strech your stomach out, etc.

Need some cheese to go with your baloney?!

I could use the same argument to place a vice tax on Bic Macs. Doesn't mean I want to pay more for my Happy Meals.

Oh, and if paying an exorbitant amount for those vices actually worked to make people quit indulging, there would be no more smokers. Have you priced a pack of cigarettes lately?

Both "regular" sodas, and diet sodas, are extremely unhealthy, and unnecessary. I don't agree with a "ban" or a tax, but I would like to see the elimination of hfcs, and of aspartame....

In NY, the governor was talking about "fat taxes". Taxes on soda and junkfood- which I think is really stupid because even staples like bread, milk, and butter will make you fat.

They tried doing this with cigarettes and I dare say that it isn't working. The only thing that is accomplished is that more of our money is going to the government coffers.

I agree, it is similiar to the smoking taxes...what a crock making it cost more will NOT make people stop buying it!!!! and not letting them buy soda will not make them suddenly not obese.

Also, he mentions sugar added juices...which reminded me of WIC and while I don't remember much about it I do know it entitles you to juice and you have to buy certain juice....how would that effect WIC??? I doubt the government would pick up the extra 18% so what? The people who are already having a hard providing for their families need something else added to their over flowing plate???

HMMMM, I really think the key is NOT to tax soda and "sugar sweetened juices" but to help educate more parents on the effects of ALL bad eating habits on their children.

You all know I don't agree with my SIL2B's child rearing and this is a HUGE factor on why...now don't get me wrong a few cookies/candies/sodas/etc. isn't going to kill them BUT when they eat like her kids...we have a HUGE issue and I'm afraid that her's aren't alone...the three year old has Oreos for breakfast, powdered donuts for snack, chips and cookies for lunch, and refuses to eat anything for dinner(not that her mom fixes her anything) and then they both eat Oreos before bed...are you kidding me???? not to mention the sippy cup of Orange Soda she ALWAYS has in her hand...and her mom always tells me "you don't have kids" when I say anything...no I don't, but I'm sure when I do they will have a better diet than that!

Sorry for the hyjack....I don't think taxing soda will do anything but peeve people off.
    I'm in the DB too!
