...the cashier didn't ring up some of your q's and kept them! It's starting to happen more often and I'm starting to get really irritated. What do you do when this happens? It may seem like a petty complaint to them, but they are messing with my money! I just don't know if I should say something or just leave it alone. What do you all think?

I had this happen the other day at Publix, again, and it's really starting to tick me off. I know what coupon's I gave the cashier, but how do I prove it after I've left the store? I should pay better attention but with 2 children who are always with me that's just not always possible. And it's usually the higher $ coupon's that don't get rung up.

Wow. I don't know what to say. No it is not petty. That is not right.

The next time, hawk it out. Watch everything and double check before you leave the register. I don't know if you can prove it right now. But, for comfort, I am sorry this happened to you.

I had a cashier insist that I did NOT give her the coupon I refused to pay for my order till she found it. She put the transaction on hold ( was VERY Upset) and looked through her drawer... GUESS WHAT there it was, boy was she mad!!! They can not cancel a order without a manager and VOIDS are bad so maybe check it while it is being rung up. Just a thought........

There are several ways to combat this problem -

    1) Count the number of q's before you hand them over, then watch the scanner and count. It's easy to say, "I handed you twelve coupons, but only ten came off. Can you check?"

    2) Know a rough estimate of what your total should be after q's. If it's too high, ask her to check that all the coupons scanned or see if something didn't ring up correctly.

    3) If you don't want to hold up the line, stand to the side and check your receipt. If it's not adding up, go straight to the customer service desk. They will pull the q's from the cashier's drawer and count them against your receipt.

    4) Worst case scenario (I personally hate doing this), group your purchases together by q, then handed the q's over as each are scanned. Example - scan 4 candles, hand the cashier 4 candle coupons. Scan 4 cans of corn, hand over 4 corn coupons...you get the picture.

Contrary to popular belief, the stores aren't doing us any favors. WE are the one doing THEM a favor by bringing them our business. It's their obligation to make sure that we have not been overcharged - not having coupons scanned is being overcharged. I guarantee that if they thought YOU had underpaid, they would have no qualms about stopping you in your tracks at the door. Don't hesitate to make sure they don't take money out of your pocket that isn't theirs.

Mark coupons with a dot or initials, count them before you hand them to the cashier. Write the number down if you have too. Ask the cashier BEFORE you pay how many coupons were scanned or wait until after you pay then count them up. Don't leave the store until you know all 20 coupons were scanned.

Coupons are like cash to me, I would never ever hand over a handful of cash to pay a bill without counting it first.

The dot idea is a really good one. I'm going to have to use that.

This happened to me today. This Kroger is really close to my house so I didn't want to be a pain. Usually I can only deal shop in the evenings which is a bad time. People tend to be in a rush because they are getting off work. I bought 46 soft pack baby wipes which were supposed to be free. Five $1 pack batteries with $0.75 coupon, 3 buddies soap priced at $1.09, and some free birdseye steamfresh. My total came out to $12. ??? I went to the service desk and the customer service worker was very polite and nice but said she could only find $5 in mistakes. By this time it was cold and I was tired of being in Kroger. I probably won't pursue it further because I shop there alot. I will use it as a learning experience. I don't think I will do such a larger order next time, or I will deal shop in the morning when the lines tend to be short. This is frustrating because I began couponing so that I could pocket the grocery budget money in my savings.

Happens to me too. I normally pick a line with a large order ahead of me so that I have time to get my groceries on the belt & be ready to watch them like a hawk as they scan them. They CLAIM to double up to .49, but half the time the q's do not double without manually doubling them.

I always get behind a long line or in a line that I have built up a repor (sp?) with the cashier so she is super helpful. I also nearly always hand them in each set (my store only doubles 3 like Qs so I hand her each three at a time) and make some comment about multiples doing weird things so I am trying to head that off. They usually calm down on what they percieve to be know it all customer when they realize I am just trying to get out of there with the hassle of managers.

I like the marking idea too. I might add that in now!
