CHAT How has the Recession hit your home town? With Job layoffs/cut backs.

Mine, there is a hiring freeze at my public schools. (I live in NY.)
I am a substitute,(not a teacher). They just told me they aren't allowed to call substitutes. That, the other regular full timers have to chip in and cover. (Now they had 5 people out today in the same line of work and they were going nuts.):hectic1:

The public school aren't hiring at all. There is a freeze. They can't even order supplies, right now.

Some say, (a source in the school district), that next year there will be layoffs.

(I thought the public schools were one of the safest places to work?)

So, any teachers or workers in public schools out there? What is your town up to? And other professionals. Have there been layoffs or cut backs?

(I am so grateful for the opportunity I had working there. I was so sad. Nice people. I had and have favor and I believe this isn't the end......So, I guess back to cutting coupons, LOL.)

This thanksgiving, I believe for myself, will be one of the most memorable for me. I have so many blessings, that so often I have taken for granted.

My DH just got laid off today from his 3rd job this year. He is a cable technician. I really though people got cable TV/internet no matter what the economy was like. Well, like I said, this is the 3rd time this year so we kind of know what to expect and just find it really annoying. We know how to get by, but it sucks to have to constantly be scrounging for work when there isn't any.

It just goes to show that no one's job is safe right now. It doesn't matter your education, training, experience, or seniority.

I live in north east Alabama and things here seem pretty stable. There's a Honda plant nearby that HAS cut production but hasn't actually laid off anyone to my knowledge....homes are still selling slowly. No businesses have closed that I've seen.

    We are blessed!

Dh had lost his job for four months but we did okay and he is starting a great job on Monday with great benefits and nice salary. (he has been working a temp job for a couple months with no bennies)

I'm also a sub teacher and haven't gotten a lot of calls but don't know if there's any type of freeze involved. I hadn't heard that if there is one.

I live outside of Dayton, OH. In August, when Forbes released the "10 Fastet Dying Towns in America", we were right there with other cities in the Rust Belt.

My husband lost his job to downsizing over 2 years ago. He's gone to school to learn a new trade (heating and air), but the work is hard to find. There goes the theory that everyone needs heating and cooling! I have tried hard to find a job too...but nobody is hiring.

Everyone I know has been hurt by this.

I live in the Sandhills of North Carolina. Our Coalition for Human Care is helping 100 additional families each month, so I have stepped up my personal donations and I talk about it to whomever I meet. I have one lady who brings me her extra coupons, plus those from her church so that I can purchase additional items for those empty shelves. We were at the Coalition this past weekend and they said their needs have increased 50% since last year.

I work in public school, and subs are often not called in now. Hubby's place of employment employs 100 people. 4 jobs were eliminated a few months ago, and 10-14 more people will be laid off before Christmas.

Things are pretty bad here. My college is losing 30% of its budget because of the economy. We're no longer hiring one of our open VP positions. I'm hoping my work-study job doesn't get cut. I can make it financially without it, but it will be a year of beans, rice, and frozen vegetables (free after coupons, thank goodness I know how to coupon)!

I drive by the food shelter on my way to school every morning. This morning, there was a line of about FIFTY people for it. I have never seen such a long line before at this place!!!

I'm considering selling my car, because I am moving onto the bus line Dec 1. Not having to pay for insurance, gas, tags, and maintenance will help a lot. But it will also be a pain in the butt....

Oh well, it might just be time to suck it up.

Here in Oregon the housing slump arrived a lot later than the rest of the country, but it sure is here now! I'm in construction and fully expect to be laid off before the end of the year, if not the end of this month...:(

All of the smaller food banks in our area have been shut down. Everything goes to the Second Harvest food bank now. There are more people needing food and less of it to go around. We are getting hit hard.
