I used to be a private investigator. I was once challenged by the local TV news to do a full background check on someone and the only clue I had was their car tag number. I didn't even have a name. In 24 hours, when they came back to my office to finish filming the spot, I had a complete dossier of the man, his wife, his son's arrest records, his business, his home, his unpublished telephone number, and his net worth. I also had all the lawsuits he'd been involved with. Almost all of the information I was able to develop on him were from public records that by law cannot be held back from the public.
