Default Re: Am I the only one who is ticked about the "school supply" lists?

I will defend the ry erase markers...at least for our district. They are not pooled and each student has them in their desk with a dry erase board (district suppied) which about the size of a sheet of paper. They practice their penmanship on it so save paper, do math problems and whatever else. I too wold balk at supplying markers for the teachers to se on the "big" classroom boards.

I agree that the copy paper being brought in by the stdents in nuts. I've volunteered in the office and have seen ho much is wasted. I've also learned though the years that most of the spirals come home in June with one or two pages used. When I asked, the teacher told me that the lists are district wide but each teacher may or may not use the stuff....now I can take an educated guess at what to but, and wait until I can check with the teachers. One of my children has part time special ed and that teacher is so organized that she sends a list home in June and she is frugal/simple living and encourages reuse of the previous year's stuff. Now if the rest of the rest of the teachers would get their acts together.....

Lol OP....Glad to know that at least our districts get their ideas from each other....When ours started asking for the copy paper...Thats where I refused!!! Last year my Fifth Grader literally had his backpack stuffed to the gills and I also carried a bag in for him!!! And that didn't even include the paper!! And to top it all off.....They wanted $15.00 for folders!!! WTH!! Didn't I just buy him a bunch! Turns out it was the planner that the school made for all kids!! Probably took them maybe 3 or 4 dollars to make!!! It seems like every year they try something new!

Right now on rachel ray they are discussing tyeachers needing to pay for supplies. This teacher on here now says she spends 15,000 a year on supplies that is a bit much I dont believe its that high but its odd that I just read this thread and this pops up on the tv.

Oh yeah, the kids have made some cool art on the coffee filters and neat craft stuf like snowl=flakes ot of them...but they certainly don't use a pack each. I was reading some of these posts to my husb and he figures it's just a matter of time until some of this stuff (paper, cleaning supplies, cofee filters,) appear on our lists. We are not in the wealthies district in the state by a long shot but this is the district with the best wages....guess where our money is going? Nine years of pubkic schools down, nine to go!!!

i dont know about you, but i would be rather um pissantish (for lack of better word) if my child was drinking coffee at school--even though i was pilfering dads cold black coffee at 3(maybe thats why im only 5ft5ish???) let alone doing any cleaning that was NOT a mess created by them.........oh wait, when i worked at a day care, and kids were NOT behaving i would have them wash walls.....maybe thats what the teachers do???

Default Re: Am I the only one who is ticked about the "school supply" lists?

Our school sells pre-packaged per grade level. They usually do this just before school starts, ok deal since alot of the supplies are personalized with the school mascot/logo, but this year, no on-site sale, we have to "conveniently" order online and they will deliver to classroom, well aside from the cost of convenience, they want almost $100 for 2 kids, the online sale was only until mid-July. Our neighborhood stores are carrying every other schools pre-packed but not ours. So now I am stuck buying according to "the list". The items, sure some of them are needs, but the others, come on....I can probably collect the 96 pencils both boys need from their supply box that they bring home after every school year, and the funny thing is they will already have somebody else's name on them! Most of the teachers already know that aside from the chocolate dipped pretzels I send 4 times a year, I will also buy gallons of glue, boxes of copy paper & whatever bulk crafty stuff I can get for cheap, just as my way of saying "thank you" for all they do for my kids and others. This year I won't be sending every item on the list and my kids are the ones who suggested it, but I will make sure their teachers are taken care of....besides, who wouldn't appreciate some freebies from my stockpile?

My kid is not in school yet - he's on three.

But I remember when I was a kid it was so simple just the basic notebooks, crayons, pencils, etc.

But what happens to those families that simply cannot afford to bring in some of the extra supplies like coffee filters, dry erasers, etc.?
