Well 1, everything was picked over by then. 2, stuff was no longer on sale, 3. you had to rely on middle school child to write down supply list and bring said list home AND give you the list
That and the supplies needed for older kids are more expensive ($100 calculators), gym clothes, art fees, sport uniforms, etc) |
UGH..don't like the sound of that. I never got any list from my son last year...but maybe he just never brought it home. That wouldn't surprise me at all. In Indiana we have the book rental and registration fees. I would go postal if they started asking for $100 for anything in addition to that nonsense.

| Re: Am I the only one who is ticked about the "school supply" lists? Our school doesn't "pool" the items, they go directly into the classrooms... we are asked to bring the normal pencils, crayons and markers (all MUST be a specific brand!!?? HUH?) 1 box kleenex, glue sticks and the like.
I don't send my kid with anything, they offer us a backpack FILLED with everything we need (and a NICE one at that!)
Our school system doesn't have a surplus to my knowledge... We just closed down a handful of schools 2 years ago, and my sons school was on the chopping block. The only thing that saved us really, was that it's got contemporary AND montessori programs, AS WELL as an autism inclusion program.
I know that at the end of the year the teacher sent out the list, but I ignored it... I've still got several hundred pencils from Albertsons closing down 3 years ago...
Sounds like it sucks to live in some of your areas.... :(

| Re: Am I the only one who is ticked about the "school supply" lists? Oh, I hate those lists. DD#2 (who is going into 3rd grade) has had tennis balls on her list for the last several years....turns out it's for the legs of the chairs. WTH? I stopped sending those, b/c that's a ridiculous request. I also buy only enough for my daughter & I put her name on EVERYTHING with a permanent marker
DD#1 is in her last year of middle school and they have a list, but don't seem to share supplies, thanks goodness! But again, she is at that age where she just can't have the plain folders mom can get for $.05

| Re: Am I the only one who is ticked about the "school supply" lists? Wow those things are not on the list here Id be pretty upset to see cofee filters on the list of things a student should bring. I think Id have to ask if my child was going to have full acces to the teachers lounge since he was supplying items for it. That is insane Id be livid on that one. And also on copy paper!
But here items like purell, kleenex, and clorox wipes all come out of the teachers pockets. And they dont make great money and I dont feel thats right either. So, I dont have a problem sending those. I mean if each kid sent one it would last all year most likely. I would think the teachers should be given money to buy these things and it should be part of what we pay taxes for but its not so Im okay with things like that. I dont think it should be mandatory though maybe at the bottom of the list please bring one of the following items. Of course then youd have 20 people buy the purell and no kleenex or what have ya. We used coupons and stuff last year to make sure my neices teacher had those things and she was beyond greatful.
They dont pool things either and as annoying as that would be I can see the thought process behind it. There are a lot of parents who wont send even the basics there are some who just cant afford the items and then you have the lazy dead beats who just think oh well if I dont send it someone else will. They never give a second thought to where that come fromes - the teachers pocket , the pooled supplies that other parents spent $ on, the supplies that caring parents donated for that reason ect. It doesnt come from the school or the state.
Atleast we all know how to get these things at affordable prices.
Id still have to say something about those coffee filters though that burns my bottom and its not even on our lists.

| Re: Am I the only one who is ticked about the "school supply" lists? Well, I guess I must be lucky. The only "non-teaching" supplies we have to bring are a box of Kleenex and 2 boxes of Zip-locs and I see the use of both of those.
My dd is a middle schooler, but 100% of her supplies were basic: notebooks, binders, pencils, scissors, etc... In fact, almost every one of those things were either left over from last years 1¢ sales or purchased this year's sales. For the big stuff, we went to WM and I got overage from H & S Qs, Powerade and Gillette Qs. I estimate that ALL OF HER SUPPLIES (except backpack) cost less than $3 OOP. |

| Re: Am I the only one who is ticked about the "school supply" lists? my kids are going into 1st and 3rd grade this year-----things i thought rediculous for a 2nd grader: dry erase markers topped my list(mom supplied me withthe extras from my little sister last year) and the school takes pics in the spring--which is cool---but they dont ASK if you want them, they just send them home after they get back to the school, and if your child cuts one out, you have to pay $30 for the stupid 3 pictures you recieve!!!!
my daughter was in kindgergarten last year, and snacks are supplied by the school----yet i had to pay a $20 snack fee AND send a snack for 30 kids every 3 weeks????? what the heck---why?????
i dont have my kids school supply list either---but as far as im concerned, they can have what i can afford and i am NOT going out of my way to supply stuff i do not think my child(ren) needs, besides, we as taxpayers pay for public education and well some stuff they "require" is bull crap and it should be coming out of school budget NOT my pocket
Then theirs those book orders/the book fairs/the 3 sets of pics taken in a year/the pto demanding $/field trip $----at what point does OUR TAX $ actually go to the school? and what are they doing with it to keep demanding/requiring/requesting MORE AND MORE AND MORE???? |

| Re: Am I the only one who is ticked about the "school supply" lists? Wow i thought i had it bad having to supply the teachers copy paper and dry erase markers...Coffee filters!!??? that's REDICULOUS! I mean come on, I know teachers don't get paid all that much but to have them as a requirement???? I would think a seperate list of things the teachers would appreciate be donated but are not required would probably get them a whole lot more.

| Re: Am I the only one who is ticked about the "school supply" lists? I was kinda shocked at the supply list for my oldest ds. Most items were reasonable (crayons, glue sticks, pencils, marble comp books, construction paper & kleenex) I was shocked that he needed 5..yes 5 tubs.. of baby wipes!! It said please no wet wipes in round containers, but tubs for easy stacking!! Underneath the list was a note that said donations would be glady accepted for paper clips, staples, brown lunch bags, paper plates, index cards and looseleaf paper.
I'm a sucker, so I have a pack of paper (.15@OD last week) & a box of paper clips (.19@walgreens). |
