Actually Plavx did have a generic form come out about 3 years ago and was pulled right away since the patent hadn't truly expired. Dh has been on it since it's debut. But get ready since the next bigger, better, faster, stronger, drug is on the way and most Cardiologists will be switching. The extended patent is due to expire soon. And Yes it does pay to shop around for these meds and I have actually had Target price match other pharmacies in the area. You almost have to spend as time searching out the medication deals as food and rebate deals.

Okay, I'm glad I asked and I will be shopping around, but I realized the reason it was so much cheaper at Kmart was actually because we finally reached our deductible. I didn't realize that when we reached our medical deductible was also when our prescription coverage started paying 80%. Weird. Also I'm confused by that because the prescription coverage HAS covered some meds, they just didn't cover the Plavix hardly at all. They were very happy to pay for the $4 and $15 generics. Anyway... I do plan to call around and I've definitely learned a lesson!

Hmmm... get an in with the doc and get free samples. GREAT idea!

I think it pays off more to find good prescription deals. I have to work really hard to save $30 or $50 on food, but on prescriptions... drop in the bucket!

You may have what they call a RX coverage tier plan. You can call your insurance and ask them what the different tier plans are. I have several patients with this kind of coverage. It is hard to figure out what is covered on what tier with all the different insurance companies. This is our typicle 3 tier plan we see a lot to give you and idea.

Tier 1 Generic Brand = Lowest Copay
Tier 2 Brands on preferred brand name drug list = Middle Copay
Tier 3 Brands with no generic or not on preferred brand name
    drug list = Highest Copay

Our cats are on several human medications, so I have called around and found the best prices for what we buy at Target (which was even cheaper than Walmart!) It's certainly worth calling and asking.
