Default Diabetic Meds and Testing Strips?

My DH is a Type 1 diabetic who lost his job last year (the same month we had our baby!) He uses Novolog insulin (pump) and One Touch Ultra testing strips.

We can't afford the cobra benefits (and, since he's diabtic, he's ineligible to pick up a new cheaper health plan) and he's about to run out of all his supplies.

The insulin runs about $100/bottle and strips are $1/ea.

Aside from switching to generic strips, does anyone have any good tips on how we can save money on meds/testing strips?

We'd really apprecaite the help!

Sorry you are having to deal with this on top of unemployment.

I would recommend contacting the companies of the supplies he uses to see if he would qualify for any assistance, ie free or reduced meds/equipment. Many of the companies do this for those with a lower income.

Also, check with his doctor to see if he/she is aware of any assistance program.

Yep, call them. I called for strips coupons, and they ended up sending me a meter and 200+ strips (for the cat, but they never asked, and they did ask my occupation which was a student) at no cost.

Hocks.com is a great reliable place as well, with good prices.

To save on insulin I suggest joining Walgreens Prescription Savings Club or at least asking about it. That sometimes can help with the cost of insulin. Also, try asking Walmart about their prices on insulin, CVS, Walgreens, Target all get different prices on insulin and charge differently. Find the place who will sell it to you cash at the cheapest price.

Also, What kind of insulin pump does he use ? I use one myself and have extra supplies that I can donate to you --if we use the same insulin pump. I just sent you a private message. Let me know.

Visit clinicaltrials.gov

they have studies for diabetics that will give free supplies and some even pay you. I know not everyone is in favor of using investigational medication, but when I searched there was some that didn't involve any new medications, and some that just want a 'control' group to compare to the people using the investigational medicines.

Generally no. You can find better deals on craigslist.

I would also speak to your husbands PCP or Endocrinologist op.
