RE: Can we talk Vacuum Cleaners for a minute? I sold vacuums for 3 years (Right before Dyson came out so no opinion good or bad there)
I followed consumer reports and the best overall and especially repair ratings were:
Hoover
Kenmore
Bissell
The worst were consistently:
Dirt Devil
Eureka
If you are looking for an upright I would recommend a Hoover Windtunnel. If you are looking for a cannister model I would go with a Kenmore.
I am wary of bagless vacuums! No, you do not have to replace the bags but the filters are typically more numerous and more expensive to replace. With a bagged model the bag is a filter in itself and keeps the dirt and allergens contained during removal.
Whew! If all else fails raid all the grannies you know one of them probably still has an electrolux!

At the time we didn't want to pay that much and sold it to the electrolux company for $125.00!! sure wish would would have just spent that small amount of money and had it fixed... We sure went through A LOT more then $150.00 in vacuums in the next 8 years! | If you can find one I would say go for it!
My mom, aunt and my best friend's mom all have one from the 60 era and they are still being used!
My best friend went through soooooo many vacuums (all very cheap but still) We went yard saleing and found one in pristine condition. We fought over the stupid thing and she won (I had just purchased a new Kenmore cannister).
$35.00 for an almost 40 year old vacuum that still does the best job!
