We too have gone through our share of vacuums and once, we got an Electrolux from a friend that was moving, it was built in the late 1960's and it was not all that pretty! Boy did that thing work and work and work about 8 years later it seemed to have died and would have cost us about $150.00 to get it fixed. At the time we didn't want to pay that much and sold it to the electrolux company for $125.00!! sure wish would would have just spent that small amount of money and had it fixed... We sure went through A LOT more then $150.00 in vacuums in the next 8 years!

I would recommend that you find a reputable vacuum repair shop locally and ask them their opinion of what is the best vacuum to get. They may even have a reconditioned one you could pick up for way less than new cost. Get one that has METAL inside, rather than plastic. I bought a Eureka <something or other>- which was almost $100 itself!- in June, and it has already died- just melted down (too many long-haired womenfolk in this house, not to mention just too many FOLK- for the vacuum, anyway!). Now I am trying to decide of I want to pay $50 for a two-month-old Electrolux with a hot-glued-on wheel (from the vacuum repairman's shop), or see if my grandma will let me have her 15 year old Kirby when I go to visit her, or go for something else. I'd love a Dyson, but that is not high enough on the priority list at the moment. But believe me, what the vacuum is made of makes a huge difference! But there are other options than simply going to the nearest store and paying full price for a brand-new, inferior machine out of pocket (which is what I did in June). Have you thought of craigslist, or bartering?

OH man the fury was my FAVORITE! Second favorite is my sear canister..I clean houses for a living & have used many different types, I will have to say, Dyson is not my favorite as far as being user friendly goes. If you ask a vacuum repair center, they are not up on dysons..the never loses suction & no filters is an outright lie according to them. Hoover is an excellent model from research, stay away from dirt devil & eureka. The bagged Hoover is rated higher than the bagless.

Check craigslist..see if you can find one used! I have several I've picked up second hand..I have an extra upstairs & in my garage. The Hoover I have upstairs I paid $7 for & it just needed a $7 belt, works excellent!

We have a hoover and it is an excellent machine and durable - has lasted us 3 years, which is a miracle in our house.

I started using dh's shop vac & can vacuum the whole floor in minutes. I tell you that thing picks up everything even water. Works for me LOL. It cut my vacuuming time 90%.

We have just a cheap $40 model from Walmart. I think our next purchase will be a Roomba. A friend of ours has one; they spent $400 on the top model, and it comes with a lifetime warranty, if it breaks the company will fix it for free. So they spent $400 on the only vacuum they will ever need. I think it's a good deal, although it's a lot of money up front.

I just got a Dyson for my Bday and love it. I have had them all Kirby, Rainbow, all the regular ones with no bag and think the Dyson picks up much better.

I sold vacuums for 3 years (Right before Dyson came out so no opinion good or bad there)

I followed consumer reports and the best overall and especially repair ratings were:

Hoover
Kenmore
Bissell

The worst were consistently:
Dirt Devil
Eureka

If you are looking for an upright I would recommend a Hoover Windtunnel. If you are looking for a cannister model I would go with a Kenmore.

I am wary of bagless vacuums! No, you do not have to replace the bags but the filters are typically more numerous and more expensive to replace. With a bagged model the bag is a filter in itself and keeps the dirt and allergens contained during removal.

Whew! If all else fails raid all the grannies you know one of them probably still has an electrolux!

If you can find one I would say go for it!

My mom, aunt and my best friend's mom all have one from the 60 era and they are still being used!

My best friend went through soooooo many vacuums (all very cheap but still) We went yard saleing and found one in pristine condition. We fought over the stupid thing and she won (I had just purchased a new Kenmore cannister).

$35.00 for an almost 40 year old vacuum that still does the best job!
