[QUOTE=IntoTheMystic;3048998]Sounds like you've talked it through and you have a plan that is good for you. Just keep purging...it helps. And don't think of things as "his"...If I did that, there would be piles and piles of rubble and God-knows-what-else up to the ceiling. I figure once it walks into this house, and does not get put into it's "place", it becomes fair game. I would tell your husband that if it's important to him, he needs to store it in his studio...my husband's safety zone is our walk out basement. That's it.

Also, I know it's hard moving into "his" house, but you just have to get out of that head set. My husband owned this house with his first wife, who passed away. After 13 years of cleaning, painting, scraping, fixing up, remodeling and rebuilding this house, I am way past seeing this as "her" house or "his" house.

I agree with his studio being his "safety zone." For my DH we have a little room off the garage where he keeps his poker table, gun cleaning stuff, etc. It's his little oasis.

As for an office area-we have a huge walk in storage closet that takes up one entire wall in our family room. DH turned one side into an office area with a built in desk-so we could have a place to go with a PC and a file cabinet for all of our paperwork. The other side is my stockpile area. We had to think outside of the box-but this works great becuase all you have to do is close the doors and no one sees all of the paper work mess or the stockpile!

Please excuse my spelling-my LO is on the loose and just learned how to climb-so I am typing as fast as I can!

It may not seem like I have done a lot of purging but I donated 22 boxes of clothes to Goodwill, a bedroom suite, 3 computers and sets of dishes and pots and pans. I gave away my televisions, living room set, hutches and desk.

I kept my dining room set and I'm going to have it refinished to a darker stain. I also kept my spare room bedroom furniture and that is currently in storage. My daughter had a grow with me crib and I'm trying to find someone who wants that, it is also in storage.

Maybe a big part of it, is that I do want everyone to have their own space. Currently, there is no place to workout if the weather is bad and I can't make it to the gym. I could have a gym and use it as a study as well.

I'm not too concerned with the money as we just basically saved maintaining and paying for another home by joining households.

I want to be reasonable and make the right decision. It will come.

I really love reading everyone's opinions and advice.
I see..since he has the studio set up like that then no it would not be a good thing to try to move the studio some where else...I am still not sold on paying for a storage unit to rent. I think that you could buy you one for what you will pay for renting one for a year, then it would be yours for what ever you needed it for in the future.

I think that you have more room than you think that its just that you are use to a much bigger house. I also dont think you see the house as "his" house but that you type it that way so we know what you are talking about. It is hard for two families to learn to live in one house this way I have been there done that like many others on here have but onice you get use to it I really think you will like it.

I there is 6 in my family and we have 4 bedrooms. We dont think much about it for its been that way for years. Sometimes I wish I had more room but we dont really need it, just want it.

Onice you get all set up and make give the house more of a womens touch I think you find that you like it more than you think you will at this point and time..

During the next year I would pay as much on this house as I could even try to pay it off if I could.. Then you could either sell it remodel or just add a room or two.

It really would depend on how big the rooms are. Our house has 1700 sq. ft. and a lot of that is wasted space. We have one really tiny bedroom and another one that isn't much bigger. Our living room is not big enough to accomodate a couch. And because of the remodel there are no empty walls in it. The one full wall has a baseboard heater on it and the other full wall has a closet there. There is only a small partial wall and then it opens into the other bedrooms and the dining room. My husband pretty much has that room to himself. He has a recliner and a TV. It's not really feasible for other people to be in it. Just not enough room.

Our dining room is so small we can only have a tiny table. It will seat 4 but it's crowded. The kitchen is similarly small. If one person is in there, an other person can not get past them. And there is no pantry. So not enough food storage room.

The family room isn't overly large but it works for us.

My bedroom is good sized. Daughter and I both sleep in there but I can just keep hoping that she will go to her own room. She has a queen sized bed in my room and I have a twin. I have a severe dislike for the queen mattress. It was my husband's. And it was cheap. We were just using it as a spare bed. But when we lived in NY we had a stupidly huge bedroom. It too had been remodeled. Daughter had no bed of her own then because she had outgrown her toddler bed. We got rid of it and my parents were going to buy her a new bed when they got there. They did but she just got used to sleeping in my room.

So when we bought this house and realized that both beds would fit in this room that is what we did. I should add that there isn't any excess room and the two beds are very close together. Would be a LOT nicer if I could get that bed out of there and maybe get myself a double bed.

Husband has his own room mainly because he is very picky about things. He has to be able to control everything and I can't live like that. So I just let him have his own room.

We also have two bathrooms. One is normal sized and the other is stupidly huge.

What we don't have is a lot of storage in this house. One the surface you see a lot of cupboards and cabinets and closets. But then when you try to use them you realize that some moron designed them. For instance, the linen closet only holds 6 bath towels! So we constantly have a laundry basket full of towels either in my bedroom or the laundry room. If we ever move again I will not only count the cupboards but look in them to see if they will work for me. I have learned that pullouts and lazy Susans are nice but I do need far more than that.

We do have a "garage" but it is too small for even one car. My small stockpile is out there and a few other things like hardware and brooms.

We do have a 400 sq. ft. "house" in the back. It is good for storing things but it is not at all convenient. So I guess we are very lucky to have that. Not everyone does.

If I had to put things in a storage unit that I had to pay for, I would think long and hard about it. I would not want to pay. Some years ago I was in a bad car accident and had to move back in with my parents rather than get a new apartment. I had been on my way to look at an apartment when the accident happened. So I did look at storing my stuff. But the storage place I found wanted so much per month I could have rented an apartment! But I didn't have the money to do that since I needed to buy a car. So my dad and I bought a kit for a shed and put it in the back yard.

As it turned out I didn't have a lot of stuff in those days and mostly it could be stored under my bed and in the garage. We only put my garden tools in the shed.

I love this idea, and wish we had something similar. I thought about a screen to block the view of my desk, but I thought that might look worse, so I've concentrated on decluttering/beautifying the space. Still, sometimes I hate looking at my desk, knowing that work is waiting for me...
