I am 8 months pregnant and am working until the day I have her, if possible. My insurance deductible is $4000 which we have already saved in our health savings account. I do not think it is fair to ask others to pay for your medical bills when you have a job and are able to do it yourself. Dont make yourself a burden on society...just because you can.

I'm also in the camp to keep working. If you have a strong desire or need for that extra month before your due date, I still suggest using your savings if you have that amount in it; it's the responsible choice to make.

Also try looking at the cost spread across the whole year you've been working instead. Around $25-$40 has been coming out every week towards that expense.

Yep, like I said I'm not considering quitting. It's just frustrating that the system works that way especially since I won't be working after the baby is born. Right now I'm working until around the end of June so I can train my replacement. That's 2 weeks before my due date.
My baby boy was born June 28, 2011!!

I agree- the way the system is set up makes it awfully tempting!!!!!

I probably wouldn't have told the supervisor that you weren't planning on coming back to work after the baby is born. If they thought you were still planning on working after you delivered, wouldn't your insurance have stayed in place?
There was a girl at my last job who took some time off for surgery, chemo, etc. She came back, worked one week, and then gave her notice. She already had plans not to work after surgery but she wanted to keep her health insurance so she played it like she was going to work full time again and came back and made an appearance and then quit.

I'm not losing my insurance. It is through DH's job. I think I may have been off on our part of the bill. Apparently for a vaginal delivery the bill should be around 5,000 and we pay 10%. A friend who just had a baby told me her entire bill was $15k. Not sure why the difference.

You never know what can happen during delivery. My youngest ended up in the NICU for about a 1 1/2 weeks, she had a difficult time breathing. I also had problems after the delivery, so there were extra costs involved with that. I don't know what the entire costs ended up being, but they were huge.

Everyone will have a different opinion, but you need to be prepared for the unknown. So be sure to really think about your options.

My last ENTIRE bill from the hosipital (not including ob/gyn doc fee) was 16K. It was a regular vaginal delivery except for the epidural and that cost was $800. I only stayed one night also, left right after she turned 24 hours old, I can't imagine what the costs would have been had I stayed another night!

I planned a vaginal delivery. Ask me how THAT went?

I swear, a room at a hospital is like one of the best hotels out there!!! Here in UT it's about $600-800 a day just a "facility fee" With my DS#2 my DH and I went through every single charge on our bills, and it's crazy to see what they charge you!! What made me laugh is when I saw that they charged us $6 PER PILL of prenatal vitamins (and you are not allowed to bring your own!!). Seriously??? I paid less than $10 for a bottle of 220!! This is so messed up!!!
