that there's no money for payroll........

I'm currently in transition from one job to another, but found out yesterday morning (pay day) that we wouldn't be receiving payroll checks. So now what? They don't know, all they know is there isn't enough money this time to pay payroll and if they have to file for bankruptcy they will protect our wages and will pay them out of assets. They really need everyone to continue to work so that money can start to come in, they will pay us when they can.....

Somehow I'm not sure that is a good promise since we didn't even know we wouldn't be paid.

I wonder if I can pull that at the grocery store? Let it all ring up and then say "oops, no money in the bank account, catch you next time" and leave with my groceries.

I don't remember handing out the 'free labor' coupon to my employer.....

Sorry this has happened to you. You should visit your local unemployment office to file a Wage Payment Claim Form. In IL, you can do it online, then print it out to mail it in. Just to be sure you are covered properly, call the office to see what your rights are. This happened to a friend and he didn't get paid for over a year. It was a very long, drawn out process. I didn't know we could file unemployment, since they are asking us to continue to 'work' there. I will give them a call. Thanks!

In essence they are asking you to work for free since they didn't pay you on your scheduled payday. I believe the unemployment office should be able to help you decide if you should stay or can quit (no fault - since no pay) and collect unemployment.

Personally, I would not be going back, to a company that did not pay me.
That expects free labor, its too risky, working for free.. and not knowing if you'll ever see $$ for your time.. i feel really bad for you and hope the above suggestions work.. good luck and in my prayers.

I would let them know, that you're on a "break~ leave of absence, until you get paid"..that to me is fair. (It won't be to them, and they'll also think its fair, not to have paid you... bc they have tons of other expenses that they have to pay "first".~ you think they didn't know about this, .. i'm betting they did..)

This happened to me early out of college.
I loved my job and what I did,
but I was in no position to NOT get a pay check.

I began looking for other work right away!
And found some fairly quickly.

I called the creditors/bills that I owed, and told them my situation
just to have open lines of communication
and assure them that I wasn't renigging on my payments.
