Ours put an envelope with her name and address on it in our paper. We thought that was a bit bold. I have never tipped a paper person at Christmas but we hadn't had a paper delivered for years until this year, and I now have two delivered per week because of couponing. I just saw a guideline from Emily Post on MSN saying $10 to $30 or a small gift. I was shocked. I know I am really cheap but that is more than I spent on my child's preschool teachers (per teacher). Money is really tight for us. Opinions?

My delivery person is a woman and she occasionnaly gives me extra inserts. The first year I gave her some shampoo, toothpaste and Oil of Olay body wash. She thanked me profusely for the body wash so I continue to give it to her at Christmas and Easter. That way if she has extra inserts, she'll think of me and toss them into my box. It's a win-win for both of us.
I give to my paper guy every single week, not only for his personal use, but I give to him to donate to his church too, not sure if I should even consider doing a cash donation on top of all that...he gets me inserts, but not nearly as much as I give him in product.
I pay for my neighborhood paper annually and include a tip with the invoice. I get billed for the Phila. Inquirer every 8 weeks and also include a tip with that.
I gave our carrier a few Glade candles :)
She left a postcard type thing with her name and phone number. It may be standard for them to leave their information.

of course!
we have a fabulous mail carrier .. we give him $20 each year .. might be cash or a gift card to local store/restaurant ..
I give him $20 and he has been giving me extra inserts
My daughter was a papergirl at the age of 10/11 and she expected nothing and was always thankful for whatever she received. We would never ever think "requesting" a tip. In the beginning she sent a little paper with her name, number and picture to let them know she was their new carrier. During Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving or another Holiday she would give each customer a card to only to send wishes their way.
If money is tight, please do not feel obligated to tip your newspaper girl especially $10-$30. If she has been a great carrier and you'd like to let her know that then anything should be welcomed, a couple dollars, a mug with hot chocolate/chocolate coated spoon fixed up cute or even a card expressing your thanks. If she truly meant the envelope as entitlement, then my husband suggested putting a Christmas card in it. ;)
Hmm. We get billed electronically but I am guessing I could add a tip somehow. I don't get extra inserts, but I have actually never met our newspaper carrier. I have met a couple people that work for the paper because when we first started our subscription I had a lot of trouble with them only delivering one paper instead of two. Anyway, I am curious as to how you get the small gifts to your carrier. Do you wait Sunday morning on the driveway?
