I use cold water on everything except whites. I use bleach on whites because I want my undies and socks more than anything to have the germs killed. We have a front load washer and I tend to look for deals on HE detergent when ever possible but if I am in desperate need I will use regular non HE detergent and use less of it. Even when I am using HE detergent I use less of it.

I use oxy bleach and cold water on my white "good towels" because the manufacture says that is the way to wash them. Seems to keep them nice and bright and fluffy. No fabric softener though as that decreases absorbency on towels.

I do 20+ loads of laundry a week and I think the energy savings adds up. I don't however line dry my clothes as it is winter here 7 months of the year and I am too lazy to drag wet laundry upstairs and outside to line dry. But I have done it when I had less children, more time, warmer weather and a washing machine that was not far from the line.

I have a top loading Cabrio without the agitator. Awsome machine! Recommends HE detergent but I use regular if no cheap HE. I used to be a Tide snob until i started doing hard couponing. The only way I would go back to Tide prices is if that or Xtra and other super cheap types. (sorry, NOT being rude, just my opinion). Even the free Wisk and All im using doesnt work as well as Tide. IMHO
The BEST thing I like about this machine is the self adjusting water level.... for some reason my 19 yr old daughter thinks a tee shirt is a full load of laundry. She is so smart but still doesnt know how to use the washer settings.
Most of my clothes are washed on warm. sheets, towels and whites are hot.

I use cold water for everything except whites and sheets and dog toys/bedding- they all go on the sanitize setting. I have a frontloader... Thanks for the tip about towels and fabric softener- didn't know that.

I really have no intention of getting a front loader.

I have the old kind. I don't care that much for my current washer...it's just okay. I am deeply in love with my dryer though. Some day when my dryer dies and I can't fix it...I will replace it with one just like it.

Didn't read the whole thread, but, I have a solar water heater. It is somewhat limiting to when i can do laundry and dishes with hot water, but you get used to it quickly and I LOVE the fact that I am using the sun instead of electricity when i want hot water!!
