FYI - for those who aren't aware. When you apply for loans, etc - they are supposed to ignore any collections against you for medical reasons. So if you have good credit other than medical things in collections - you should be good to go. BUT, I don't know exactly if this is an "understood" thing, or if everyone abides by it. I learned about it in a finance class.

I once had the AWESOMEST credit score ever! We had credit cards, personal loans, real estate loans, etc. etc. Never a single late payment on ANYTHING EVER. We were SOOOOO "responsible" with our use of credit and felt great about ourselves despite the fact that we owed over $100,000 at one point.

But then one day in April 2000 my DH and I quit using credit for anything (other than possibly for a 15-year fixed rate mortgage on a primary residence which we planned to buy/build in the future.) We got completely out of debt by April 2003--COMPLETELY out of debt, even our home was paid for--and only used credit when we bought our current house in 2005 (with nary a FICO score to our name I might add). The mortgage is in DH's name because he is the only one working so I guess he now has a credit score, but I have none.

So I guess the answer to your question is neither A nor B.

No really, it is not funny. There are some people with tens of thousands of dollars worth of credit card debt alone that have better scores than I do with my under $5000 total that is owed. Last time I checked it was in the 450s and I have no reason to believe it would have gone up since then.

I am currently working towards getting everything cleared off. I don't care to ever finance a home or a car or even have a credit card anymore, but I would like to get a job when I graduate college and at this point that is not an option in the field I wish to go in.

I think my FICO was 760 when I bought my house last year. I liked this thread, thanks.

Now because my credit score sucks... I don't deserve a job.

On one hand I agree with you, but I can see how it's valuable information to a prospective employer. Having a high credit score shows responsibility and stability. This employee obviously pays their bills on time, is careful not too take on more than they can handle, stays within a fiscal budget. It says alot about a person you'd like to hire.

I've been in the high 700's for years, even above 800 before I bought my house. I need to check it again, though.

This time last year it was impecable, I was in the high 700s with no late payments ever... and then a credit card I forgot I had went into collections, without me ever receiving a statement! I got a phone call for it in January and paid it off then gave them my current mailing address, then a few weeks ago I got another phone call saying I owed more still (finance charges) and still no statement, so I paid it off then closed it out. That one card sent my score down to 643 (just checked yesterday)!! I was maaa-ad... almost as mad as the fact that we have to pay for these scores!! Hubby's is still almost 800 though, so hopefully it will bring mine up that much quicker.

My DH and I pulled our FICO scores and while mine is in the mid to high 600's and should improve (I hope) to the high 600's low 700's in a bit after a few month when some old bad stuff falls off and I have more paid on time activity under my belt. My DH's are averaging in the mid 500's.

There goes our hopes of buying a home this summer probably. Gah. I am working on a plan to get some of his crap cleaned up. There is one baddie on his report that needs to be handled its a 4K loan he got when he was in the Military. Trying to learn about the process of handling these things is a headache though....

Your entitled to one free credit report each year. You can go to www.freecreditreport.com for yours. If you want to see your score though, you will have to enroll for one of the plans offered but no obligation to continue. Otherwise you can see your payment history and what is reporting on you. There is also a site www.creditkarma.com that will give you your fico score for free. Your not obligated to participate in an offer, but they give your names to marketing companys that match your credit score to their products. Then they send you an offer to your email.
