HELP my house needs a facelift inside.

so i live in a log home. A lot of the walls are the logs themselves. In most rooms i have at least one wall maybe two that I can paint.
    here is my dilema..
My master bathroom and bedroom need a facelift bad!
I have not done amything with these two rooms since we bought the place 5 yrs ago. I have and really old and cheap berber carpet that needs replacing....more carpet or hardwoods?? Im trying to figure out ways to do these things CHEAP since dh is building a garage that is taking up a big deal of our funds. any ideas..
im taking a sewing class this summer and i am thinking of making my own curtains...ambitious huh?
    thanks

We are going to use Allure flooring from Home depot, looks great, really durable and easy to install, pretty reasonably priced too.

as far as curtains go, a basic curtain is nothing to make if you know basic sewing skills. I have made basement window curtains, my front door curtain, and my kids bedroom curtains. they are not fancy by any means in regards to the stitch (i sewed a seam on both ends, then about 2 inches in i sewed a 2 inch or so tunnel for the rod) and then hung them up. it is all about the fabric you use and the rod you use to hang it. you can also make your own "tabs" to hang them from if you want...again this is a simple straight stitch on a machine.

another great way to "freshen up" is wall hangings. A new piece of art (you can frame yourself or take to michaels with a 50% off framing coupon) or something else to hang (quilty pieces in an old 8 piece wooden window frame, metal art, a metal star, a cool picture of your family or kids in black and white etc). and dont forget new bed sheets.

I think you can make your own curtains very nicely because I also made curtains for my windows I thought it is a difficult work but I’m wrong it is pretty interesting work to do I think you will try it soon as possible.

I totally suggest making your own curtains! So easy and really the fabric and rod make the curtains...as Mother already mentioned. Nice curtains already made are really expensive...this way you can buy better fabric or be able to make more curtains with the same amount of money you would spend on pre-made ones. Also, for your bedroom...making some nice decorative pillows for the bed is very easy also. In the bedroom, I would personally go with carpet. I can't stand stepping onto a cold hard floor in the winter. But if you do go with hard floors...another great way to spruce up your decor is with a rug. I would also second the suggestion for some nice wall art. There are plenty of simple things you can use for nice wall art without spending a ton on a big picture/painting and frame. Just the other day I saw on a home decor show to get a bunch of coordinating wallpaper samples and deco-podge them into a collage on a canvas. Looked very nice with two done like that above a bed with coordinating fabric colors.

Watch a lot of redecorating shows to get ideas (think you can watch some on HGTV's website). I have a small passion for home decor and watch those shows ALL THE TIME...lol.

Log homes are beautiful! I'm sure yours is lovely. IMHO, I would remove the old berber carpeting and replace it with hardwood. Hardwood, however can be extremely expensive. Have you pulled back the carpeting to see if there are hardwoods underneath? If they are, you may only need to sand and refinish - a fraction of the cost of installing new hardwood flooring. A couple other options: try laminate instead - they are less expensive, yet still give that "I spent a ton of cash" look. Also, try a google search for Lumber Liquidators. I'm sure you've seen their ads on TV. They offer the hardwood options for a lot cheaper. Another option would be high end sheet vinyl that looks like wood or stone. They are textured and unless you feel of them, you can't tell the difference. Armstrong has several great styles. Another plus to forgoing the carpeting? Less dust and allergens {and less housework}! Allergens and dust are easily trapped in carpet fibers, making more housework for you.

Since I don't know your decorating style, it's difficult to know exactly what else to suggest. Try looking online at places like Overstock, where you can find all sorts of things. Before you make a purchase online, check out Coupon Cabin for coupon codes and also Free Shipping {dot} org for free shipping codes. If you can't find any for the store you wish to purchase from, try this: log on to Facebook and see if the store has a FB page. If so, post a question about coupon codes/free shipping codes for the store. I did this today for Bath and Body Works and scored a coupon code for 20% my entire purchase! I coupled that with wonderful deals from their Semi Annual sale and I saved 123.54!!

Hope this helps - happy decorating!!

My parents live in a log home and just updated their master bedroom and bathroom. Yours may be the same, but their log cabin was built when people still used outhouses so the bathroom was put in the house after it was built and is very, very small. In the bathroom they did these sunk in cabinets from floor to ceiling on both sides of the sink and they look great. The cut the drywall in between 2 of the 2x4s that make the wall (in one without electrical outlets). They then hung a decorative cabinet door over the hole by its hinges and put shelving inside.

I thought they were nuts because nothing would fit...but pretty much everything you want in a bathroom fits in there, except toilet paper and towels. So all the "stuff" that was on various shelving units hanging on the wall in their small bathroom are now gone. Looks great.
