I used the storage bins and laundry baskets for my 5 year old and 2 year old
My living room furniture is "expresso" finish. I found a nine cube shelving unit at Target for $40 in expresso, they also sell in in wood grain and white. I then used red, brown, and tan fabric cube drawers to match my decor...it's worked really well, it doesn't look like toy storage at all.

I found some stacking bins that look like this at Target: The Container Store > Stacking Recycling & Storage Bins
and they are super-handy. They can be used together or separately, and they are portable, so the kids can take them into the livingroom/tv room to pick up the stray toys in there, and they can stay stacked up in the corner and be used there too, they can dig thru them easily without having to open them or dump stuff out.
I've seen wooden ones similar to this, for $60+, but I got my plastic ones for $10.

In the living room I only allow enough toys that fit in a VERY small box, they're smart though and put all their cars in it so when it gets dumped my living room is trashed@! lol And in their bedrooms we have a large toybox that everything gets thrown in, I hate it because they can't ever find a toy without totally dumping the whole box so this weekend when we get paid, I'm getting the shelf with little colored boxes so that the toys are more easily seen.
