Default Holy cow... I knew the electric bill would be bigger, but...

This is ridiculous.

We bought a new house that is triple the size of our old one. The new electric bill was about $90 for the month, and I am an electrical scrooge. We have gas heat, so that's not on the elec bill.

I guess it goes to show how inefficient older appliances are. Out washer, dryer and fridge are all circa the early 1980s, and none of the light bulbs are CFLs.

Time to start searching for new appliances...

Wow I wish I had a bill that low. My house is very hot in the summer and freezing in the winter and my bills is around $300 a month or a little more or less. We keep the house at 62 during the winter and 79, sometimes 80 in the summer. I have to or it would be a lot worse. I got fans for this summer so I hope it gets better.

Our home is 2300-ish sq ft, I'm not an electric scrooge and we only have electric running through the home...I keep my house like an icebox in the summer (and it's been 80's and 90's here for weeks now) and my bill this month was less than 150 bucks...so 90 for conserving energy does seem high-but like the other poster, I'd pretty much squeal with joy to see a bill that low! But like I say, I keep my house cold and leave tv's running and forget lights overnight and all that, so I pay for my laziness, I suppose-and it's well worth it to me!

mine is 150ish right now...it will be 350ish by summer time.

The most expensive things to run...technically (outside of ac & furnace) are oven & dryer..because they run on 220 power. followed by fridge, freezer, stove. Washing machine really doesn't take that much power...so i'd focus on the other's first if you can.

Wow - if my bill was that low I would cry tears of joy. I need to start working on reducing our bill.

Ours is anywhere from $150 to $300 pending on the weather. This house is old though and needs new wiring and all.

Wow typical homes here are about $150-$200 a month depending on if the appliances are energy star etc. Even my very 1st TINY 1 bedroom apartment were I had energy star everything ran me $50 a month. Thanks heavens are electric is included in this apartment because I have had the A/C going since April!

I can't ever remember a bill that low:sad:

Our house is brick, one and a half story, two heatpumps roughly 2700 sq feet but living in the hot humid area of Raleigh NC, our summer bills can hit $400 and we don't crank up the air conditioner either, keep it at 72 or so.

In winter, we have heat set on 65-67.

All electric, no option for gas.

Of course we need to replace windows, but that means 34 of those puppies and that's going to be thousands. Heat pumps are as old as the house, built in 1989 so I'm sure they're not very efficient either.

~sigh~ would love even half the cost of our monthly electric bill - but it's not going to happen, even if we replaced both heat pumps and all the windows, it's not going to happen:sad:

Yikes I would give anything for a bill that low add another zero and that was my bill a few years ago when I moved in my new 5000 sq ft. house in the summer...

You just have to perhaps see where your heat a/c etc is costing you.
We were able to cut our bill in half almost a year later hence the heavy acceleration of couponing began.. ha ha.. and good thing too.

Invest in good windows and window coverings it does save a lot of heat...

Dh recently put a screen door on the door in from our garage as in the winter the draught coming in that steel door was something awful so that should save me money too.

Best of luck in finding ways to cut down and yes I have almost all my bulbs converted over to the energy saving ones pricey but they do save big..
