After reading the above story I just want to add that I frequently use white vinegar in the fabric softener slot. I don't doubt your friend had the problem you describe, but I wonder if my use of vinegar prevents the build up of detergent? I also run a rinse cycle about once a month with just a couple clean towels, hot water and vinegar only. This keeps the machine from developing any smells. Another tip for those with front loaders, you need to keep the door open slightly to dry out. Trapped moisture inside leads to a mildewy smell. I believe that HE detergents are fomulated to combat this problem better than regular, but I still don't think OP has to get rid of all their regular detergent stockpile. If they wanted they could just start buying HE detergent instead when there is a sale and alternate the use of regular with the use of HE until the regular is gone.

Ah yes, I forgot about the vinegar. I also run a cycle with it about once a month too. My mom is notorious for starting a load of clothes and leaving them overnight. I also think my mom overuses the HE too, and I told her you only need a small amount, even for the towels. I guess all those years of using a full cap of regular she still hasn't learned. So I stared cutting her bottles with water. She buys the big jug from Sams, so when a small bottle is getting low, I add a bit of water and refill from the big jug. That might help OP too by cutting the regular with water until her stockpile dwindles.

I use vinegar in every load, but I put it in the bleach trap, so I can also use softener in the rinse cycle. Works great, and my clothes come out smelling fresh and clean. I've gotten LOTS of deals lately on HE detergent. Ranging from .50/bottle (32 load) to free with the Purex deal @ Kroger. I have a garage full of HE detergent!!!

yes, my machine is now making a funny noise in the initial water cycle, so I am starting to get nervous.

I have my eye on the LG or Samsung ones.
